THE STORY OF THE VOICE OF LIAM GALLAGHER:
(Updated analysis of his entire vocal career)
In Oasis, Liam's voice was fundamental. His rock imprint, incisive and right for the mood he wanted to communicate, helped to make the songs of the band more impressive, credible and peculiar.
Liam has never studied singing, and does not use any technical / professional typology in spreading his voice. If we were to describe his way of singing we could say that his is a throat song that comes close to a "melodic scream". (Although his vocal approach to studio recordings is much more professional and relaxed than harsh and tiring live performances.)
The level of stress that his voice has been enduring for over 20 years is frightening: hundreds of concerts, often too close together, with a total absence of technique (so sung from the throat and not from the diaphragm), without adequate pre-heating. concert, with the constant presence of a strong thyroid disorder also considering the smoking-drug-alcohol factor that irremediably wears out the vocal cords.
Here is the analysis in detail.
- THE BEGINNING (1992-1994)
Between 1992 and 1994, as friends and technicians of the time also explain, Liam's voice is very delicate compared to the rock timbre that is consolidated from 1995 onwards (also because the timbre has evolved - naturally - hand in hand with advancing age).
- THE PEAK (1995-1997)
When we talk about "vocal peak" we refer to the "three golden years" of his voice, that is to the period 1995-1997. Between 1995 and 1996 Liam manages to sing with a disarming control and fluidity, combining melody and roughness, managing to become one of the greatest rock singers. In the first concerts of "Be Here Now" tour (June 1997) after a long break from the intense on the road period of 95-96 Liam still holds in his voice a perfect amount of clean but at the same time rasping, and a strong power in his voice: that nasal sound of the summer of 96 but with greater hoarseness. During Be Here Now tour this perfect alchemy is slightly lacking. In December 1997, however, for the concerts in Manchester, despite the tiredness of the tour (and of the previous years) Liam still manages to give yet another great vocal show.
-THE FIRST DOWN (1998)
In 1998 there was the first significant decline caused by the incessant live activity that has been going on nonstop for the last 4 years. Many high notes are no longer able to be reached and the timbre in general begins to suffer here and there the first strokes of failure.
- HYBRIDISM (1999)
For Oasis of December 1999, Liam's voice returns as close as possible to the peak of 1996, (even to that of June 1997) but a little more hoarse. A perfect mix of classic 90s sound with a taste of new flavors coming from the impending 2000. Liam again manages to hit all the high notes while maintaining a fabulous rasping tone. These late 1999 warm-up shows are probably the last of that "original" 90's Liam. It's no coincidence that the 90's are really coming to an end.
-MUTATION AND MATURATION OF THE STAMP (2000- first half of 2002)
Since 2000 his voice has lost power and extension compared to the peaks of previous years, but on the other hand his timbre gains more robust, balance and mastery in the lower notes. A welcome mutation that makes his voice much warmer and more imposing. This continues until May 2002.
-THE SECOND DECLINE - THE BEGINNING OF THE DARK YEARS (second half 2002-2004)
During the first half of 2002 his "new" voice (less powerful, but warmer and more full-bodied) is preserved well for the concerts of that period, but in the second half of the year strong ups and downs begin which follow one another until the end. of the Heaten Chemistry tour in 2003. Liam struggles to bear the weight of the tour much harder and his voice starts to sound strangled and in pain.
- THE DARKEST YEARS (2004-2014)
After the first "symptoms" which appeared at the end of 2002, the problems with his voice continue (excluding the studio recordings where he always appears excellent even if he advances in age).
Despite the rest and the only two concerts scheduled for 2004, Liam does not improve. The live voice appears more and more suffering and less protagonist. Despite this, Liam didn't pay any kind of care and the wrong choice of microphones contributed to aggravate the situation (incompatible with the colors and the fiber of his voice) and the mix of live sounds that make his voice too low and too much high the guitars leading Liam to strive further. The problems also continue on Don't Believe the Truth tour and get worse in 2006. In February 2007 Liam performs with Oasis at Brit Awards with a handful of songs. The performance improves from many previous tour dates but not entirely.
The live vocal problems continue even in the last tour with Oasis (that of Dig Out Your Soul between 2008 and 2009) where unfortunately there has been no significant improvement.
Meanwhile Noel is more and more inspired by new sounds, he is now fed up with Oasis and wants to pursue a solo career. The journey with the band comes to an end, and Liam founds Beady Eye with the remaining ex Oasis.
The new band debuts live in 2011 and their voice for the first half of the tour presents an unexpected and very welcome improvement and then deteriorates again (not like 2006 levels - this time Liam sings all alone without rest during the sets of Noel) .
- THE RESURRECTION (2017 to present)
With a couple of years off, a new band, new engineers, new technical equipment and a surprising solo return, Liam's voice is incredibly rejuvenated by almost 20 years, despite the annoying presence of the already diagnosed "Hashimoto's Thyroiditis" from which Liam has been affected for more than ten years and it weighs heavily on sound and vocal output creating hoarseness, weight gain, breathing difficulties and sudden coughs. As You Were not only represents an artistic resurrection and commercial success, but also a much hoped for vocal improvement.
On solo tours Liam has returned to offer live songs that he has not been able to sing for many years such as Be Here Now, Some Might Say, Rockin Chair, Gas Panic, Listen Up and Headshrinker. Its current timbre alternates between the "croaking" Liam of the 90s and the more adult and raucous Liam post 2000.
There is no lack of physiological drops and some skipped dates here and there due to vocal fatigue resulting from the incessant live activity and thyroid problems, but the important thing is that Liam is finally back as the protagonist of the stage!
-----
What Liam was able to give, in the way he gave it, will remain in the history of rock'n'roll ... the power of his best years, his style, his particular vocal timbre have created something extraordinary both inside and outside the music. Hearing him sing for over 20 years with body and soul, giving all of himself, despite the various problems, really fills us with joy!
