Some melodies are pretty poor, but those songs are saved by an impressive production and of course Liam's voice.
Weird that they chose Shockwave and the River to launch the record, they're clearly the worst of the bunch. Sadly Once seems to have been rushed recorded at the last minute, it's just the demo sped up and they tried to hide the tempo mistakes in the final recording, that's why it sounds weird sometimes. A proper new take would have taken what, a day. Liam being Liam...
Misundertood should have been more than a bonus track. It's a single. Glimmer too, very nice summer-y tunes.
Of course that rating will change after a few more listen and a proper rip. Glad they did not sold out completely to modern sound and added some very retro sounds, and thank you George Harrison obviously, who co-produced this record straight from where is now. John Barry too.
Shockwave 5/10 One Of Us 8/10 Once 7/10 Now That Ive Found You 9/10 Halo 8/10 Why Me Why Not 8/10 Be Still 5/10 Alright Now 7/10 Meadow 7/10 The River 5/10 Gone 8/10 Invisible Sun 6/10 Misunderstood 8/10 Glimmer 7/10

After a couple of proper listens, I think Once and One of us are the strongest songs, followed by Shockwave (a bit formulaic, but it certainly does the job) and Now That I Found You. After that strong start, I think quality drops a little. Halo and Meadow sound like fillers to me. Gone has an ambituous production but the song behind it is not very strong, and I do not like the spoken word bit. Be Still, WhyMeWhyNot and The River are good album tracks. I still need to give the bonus tracks a proper listen.
In terms of production: very good in the most breezy songs, but sometimes too retro in other songs. Sounding so retro was a problem with BE, and we should not go back to that In terms of Liam's singing: fantastic in songs like One of Us, a bit too Lennon-like for my taste in other songs
So for the moment I am going with 7/10 (this can obviously change with time; for instance, I like One of us more now than when it was released)

It feels like such a relaxed, carefree, happy sequel to AYW. Regardless of where it ranks in Gallagher discography, it's a delight. Nice way of putting it. It's just a fun album. Excellent production, brilliant vocals and I actually like most of the lyrics. Liam has smashed it.

The River seems misplaced on the track listing. It fires me up every time so should be nearer the start of the album imo. That’s where it’s going in my playlist anyway.
Can only rate the ‘singles’ at the minute as only heard the album tracks a couple of times. Gone, misunderstood and Why Me, Why Not? stood out to me on first listen.
Shockwave 7/10 One of Us 8/10 Once 9/10 River 8/10
Will rate the rest in a couple of weeks after I’ve played the album to death haha

I've just finished my first full listen. Will be doing a complete review soon, but my rates so far are................
Shockwave – 7/10 One Of Us – 7.5/10 Once – 8.5/10 Now That I've Found You – 8/10 Halo – 5/10 Why Me? Why Not. – 7.5/10 Be Still – 7/10 Alright Now – 7.5/10 Meadow – 6/10 The River – 7/10 Gone – 8/10 Invisible Sun – 5/10 Misunderstood – 7/10 Glimmer – 7/10
My overall is somewhere between a 7 and a 8. A much more balanced album than As You Were was.

It's a solid 8.5 I really love the fact that the Harrison-like guitar is the constant of this album. It's a really good pop-rock album.

Shockwave – 8 One Of Us – 7.5 Once – 9 Now That I've Found You – 7 Halo – 6.5 Why Me? Why Not. – 9 Be Still – 8.5 Alright Now – 8.5 Meadow – 8 The River – 8.5 Gone – 8.5 Invisible Sun – 8 Misunderstood – 8 Glimmer – 7
I’ve listened to it 4 times, twice on my surround sound and twice through headphones; it’s a BEAST through surround sound with subwoofers, btw. The production is fantastic and it’s far superior to As You Were, in my opinion. In truth, I think it’s so good it should be considered for album of the year. Trying to stay calm on the recency bias, but it might be the most complete thing released by a Gallagher in over 20 years.

Given it a 7. Probably would be an 8 for the album without the bonus tracks. It's made up of good songs and some really great vocals but there's something about some of the songs, especially the bonus tracks, that sound like it's Liam reading words off a sheet just because he got given them before some random pop star did. It's hard to define. Maybe it's in the difference between songs that sound like they were written for Liam and songs that sound like they came off a shelf.

I'm only on Meadow, but this is not the punk album I was promised! Very different sounding for Liam though, I like it Where did Liam promise a punk album? Ages ago, before WMWN even started to be recorded, he alluded to doing a full punk album

I thought he said something along the lines that he'd like to do something like that but didn't hang too much hope on those comments tbh. At this point in his solo career, I would imagine Warner's interest is to keep him commercially viable and I'm not sure a punk album would help that cause. Who knows, maybe on album 4 or 5 he can go down that road.

Everybody is obviously excited about the album being released, but I think some of that excitement has crept into people's reviews.
All scores are out of 10.
1. Shockwave - 4. I really hate the production on this. Hate the Hey's. Would definitely score higher without the hey's. Very formulaic opening single, but not nearly as good as Wall of Glass.
2. One of Us - 7. This one has really grown on me since its release. Love the chorus. Love the choir at the end. Really nice production.
3. Once - 8. Great, great song. Still not too sure how I feel about the once, once, once interlude section. Great vocals from Liam on this one.
4. Now That I Found You - 2. This is bad. Like very bad. I think if the song wasn't about Molly some people would have more critical ratings of it. Super cringe-y lyrics. Easily the worst song on the album.
5. Halo - 4. Wasn't expecting Liam to pull out some boogie-woogie. Again, dumb lyrics. Bit of a throw away song.
6. Why Me? Why Not - 9. Strongest song on the album for me. Love the production and the grandiosity of it. Probably the most rock song on the album.
7. Be Still - 4. Eh. It's fine. Not particularly great. But not particularly bad either. It's like they had a book of cliches and tried to fit them all into one song.
8. Alright Now - 5. I like the production and the music on the song. Not impressed by the lyrics nor by Liam's vocals on this. I do like the way he pronounces "Broadway" at the end though. It's a pretty dull song.
9. Meadow - 7. Would a Liam album be complete with a Lennon rip-off? Great tune though. Wish he would have pushed some of the other songs in a more experimental direction. Love the ending of it.
10. River - 6. Not a massive fan. It has its moments. It works much better in the album than it did as a single. I would probably give it a higher score after listening to it in the context of the album a few more times.
11. Gone - 8. Great closer. Very Spaghetti Western vibe. Love the spoken word bit. I like seeing Liam taking risks like this. Honestly, only this song and Why Me, Why not really feel complete.
Whole album: 5.5
The album feels really rushed and slopped together with the exception of Gone and Why Me, Why Not. Pretty much what I was expecting. Liam is his own worst enemy and definitely struggles with quality control. I'm convinced Liam hasn't even heard the album yet because the album he's been describing in interviews is definitely not this one. Nothing about it is very punk or even rock for that matter.
Still really enjoy it though.

The bit where The River starts is my favourite part of the album right now.

Its not a punk album but not a sold out album either so phew. Actually he’s never sounded THAT Beatles. The guitars are like copy and pasted from George / John and Paul solo outputs from the 70s.
Maybe they thought nobody would remember those records or and that they would get away with it haha 😂

Man, so disappointed. Songs like "Shockwave", "The River", "Gone" and "Be Still" are maybe the only songs with any bite and edge to them. The rest just sound weak and way too lush for a Liam Gallagher record. I hate using the term "over-produced" but I think it is. "Now That I've Found You" and "Halo" sound like "Street Fighting Man" and "Hey Bulldog/Let's Spend The Night Together" respectively with it's balls cut off. It's sounds so generic, it actually sounds like 18 people in a room wrote them. "Meadow" tries so hard to be an interesting take on "Blue Jay Way" just as "Why Me? Why Not." tries to do the Plastic Ono thing but it just doesn't work for me. All and all this was a very underwhelming, uninteresting and a quite boring listen. I'm so tired of hearing song about Noel like "Once" and "One of Us", but thankfully there are less of those than on As You Were. The only redeeming aspects of this album are that Liam's voice still sounds great, there aren't nearly as many tired lyrical Beatles references as his first record, but unfortunately more Beatles-sounding songs.
3/10.

In my humble opinion I like:
The chorus of Why Me? Why Not is amazing. One Of Us is possibly one of his best songs since Oasis. I like that there are no truly bad songs, they're generally all good album tracks. The album is quite diverse. The bonus tracks are good.
In my humble opinion I don't like:
I reckon they've gone a bit over the top with the effects on Liams vocals and they're too low in the mix in most of the songs. Lots of the lyrics sound generic and don't really pull me in or talk to me. Lots of the melody's sound forced, for example in Gone were there are lots of weird up and down notes, probably to disguise a bland melody. I wish the One Of Us outro was 5 minutes long.
I'll be returning to: One Of Us Why Me? Why Not Be Still
5/10

I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as you do, but I think you've articulated my problems with it really well. It's lacking a soul for me. Or, more accurately, about a third of it has a soul and the rest feels like it wasn't really written for Liam.

Shockwave - 6.5 - Yep, it's gone down again for me. Just such a bore - sure live it's a banger but it's the worst song on the album imo. One Of Us - 8 Once - 7 Now That I've Found You - 9 - His best solo song. An absolute blast. Halo - 8.5 - just brilliant. Rubber Soul meets glam rock meets Be Here Now. WMWN - 8 Be Still - 6.5 - meh, it's okay Alright Now - 6.5 -meh, it's okay Meadow - 7 - definitely get the Blue-Jay Way vibes that Liam mentioned at the start. Really like the melody in the chorus. The River - 7.5 Gone - 8
Invisible Sun - 8.5 (fantastic, should have been the album opener) Misunderstood - 8 Glimmer - 7.5
Overall then, a 7. That's just the album tracks. I think that's a fair assessment. I think it's similar to my rating for AYW, maybe a bit less, but I think the highs on this album beat the highs on AYW.
Throw in Invisible Sun and Misunderstood instead of two of the 6.5s and it's a fantastic album. As it is, it's a really solid one with a lot of variety - which is great and exactly what was needed imo.
If I want to listen to Oasis, i'll listent to Oasis. I don't want a Robbie Williams esque rip-off ballad or a something akin to an angry protest / hate on Noel song. IMO, the weakest points on the album are when it's tried too hard to be what you'd expect of Liam Gallagher. The best moments are the ones you wouldn't expect.
EDIT: Changed WMWN rating to an 8. It's very good.

I'm the opposite. So glad there's less songs like Shockwave and more upbeat songs. Liam's happy. That's reflected in the songs. What's he got to be angry about? F all. No need for him to be aggressive. He's 47, a multi-millionaire and is on top of the world.
