Seems to me that the Finsbury park event on Friday June 29th is the most significant all day Gallagher focused event since Knebworth. I lived in London in 1996, and was there on the first night at Knebworth in 1996, at 23 years old. I remember being a fan of every support act too on that night and most of the second night (still have barely listened to Dreadzone).
Support Act on Day 1 - Prodigy, Manic Street Preachers, Ocean Colour Scene, The Chemical Brothers and The Bootleg Beatles. Support on Day 2 - The Charlatans, Manic Street Preachers, Kula Shaker, Cast and Dreadzone
To me the 1996 support acts were amazing, and I knew all their hits and had their albums before the gig! Now I am a 45 year old man living in Dallas, Texas and can't fly to London easily, so will just have to hear the audio recording of the gig. And I don't know much about these support acts.
Support at Finsbury - Wolf Alice, Loyle Carner, DMA's, The Sherlocks, Dream Wife, Twisted Wheel, BELAKO, Easy Life, Trampolene, Hey Charlie
I have the DMA's stuff and like them, but have barely listened and don't know the other acts.
So is there anyone going to Finsbury who can give me their opinion of the support acts? I'd be especially interested in anyone's opinion who was at Knebworth too! I might buy some of the albums of the support acts too.

I don't think these bands are quite in the same league as the Knebworth support. I mean I saw Prodigy headline V festival in 1997, and most of the others were well established even if not quite at their peak. Maybe it's also a mark of the modern music industry that there just doesn't seem to be that many big bands around these days. Or more likely I'm just old and past it lol 😂😂

Eh, Wolf Alice and DMA's are okay but none of the other bands are in any way comparable to Knebworth support. I've barely even heard half of them and I'd say I'm pretty well informed about modern indie/rock music.
Okay, Loyle Carner might be good but I don't know much about hip hop.

Thanks guys, always in my 20's when I would hear my parents say "the music was better in our day" I hoped that I wouldn't repeat that pattern My last great discovery was Tame Impala but that was years ago. Interesting to hear that the support acts are not as good as Knebworth. That makes me feel better!

DMAs, Wolf Alice and Twisted Wheel are good, the rest I don't think I'd even heard of before the line up was announced.
It will be a great day though. I made a playlist with all the music from all the bands and I didn't hate anything in there while listening to it.

We know that the Gallaghers loved most of Knebworth's support acts. I know that Liam has said that the DMA's latest album is "biblical", but would he like the other supports? I had a brief listen to Sherlocks and I can't imagine him being a fan. It's gentle "polite" rock! He's said multiple times that so called rock bands need to turn up the guitar amps.I also have heard Liam say at interview that he barely listens to any modern bands.

Obviously you would have to ask him that, but a couple of days ago he was praising Twisted Wheel on twitter.

There were bigger names at Knebworth. Liam is not 1996 Oasis. Of course that great bands from 90s are better than average from 2010s. Just like the great bands from 2010s are better than average from 90s.

Whilst I actually quite like what they’ve done with the support bands for Friday(aka not played it safe) there’s no comparison. OCS, Charlatans, Manics and Prodigy were all huge established acts in 96.
I’d argue actually that when I saw Oasis at Cardiff in 05 that was the only gig which could give Knebworth a run with the Foo Fighters, Razorlight, Coral and Subways supporting

The Knebworth ones are obviously better.

Plus I want to know if it's just my age or if the music really was better in the 90's

Knebworth obviously better, but remember they did two nights at 125,000 a night.. so in theory the budget for supports is going to be three times bigger than one night at ~40,000.
Also shows how big Liam is to sell out Finsbury in 5 minutes on his own name, when Queens of the Stone Age still have tickets left and a line up including Iggy Pop, Run The Jewels, The Hives, Miles Kane etc...
