Le disque s'appelle As You Were. En anglais, As You Were est une expression à double sens.
Puis il y a eu When I'm In Need, et puis un autre titre, ...
Ouais, j'ai tendance à me laisser aller...
Merci man !
---- Google translate :
We have not heard you sing since the end of Beady Eye three years ago. Did not you eat? Fuck man, of course that though! rock'n'roll is my life! It's not just a job, I eat rock'n'roll, I sleep rock'n'roll, I kiss rock'n'roll, you know what I mean? I'm the rock'n'roll man!
Until today, you have always sung as a group. how does it feel to go solo at 45? Being in a group or solo, it does not change much. The main thing is the music man. Very honestly, I would have preferred to stay in a group, but since my previous two formations have messed up, I had no choice ... I have never been such self-centered bastards who want to be alone show the whole Earth that they are geniuses. Fuck the self-centered bastards. I just do my thing, in my corner, and I see what happens. All I care about is bringing a little joy to people, like when I gave this charity concert after the murderous attacks in Manchester, my city of my heart.
Your previous band, Beady Eye, split up in 2014. Are you still in touch with Gem Archer, Andy Bell and all the others? Frankly, I do not really have any news. I know Chris Sharrock is now playing with my brother. I find it funny to be so much a weathervane, but hey, it's life! In any case, we did not have much success with Beady Eye, so it says a lot about the next album of Noel! In my opinion, it's going to be pretty shit! Andy Bell has reformed Ride, which is much better news for my ears. If you want something done, do it yourself, so I decided to go back to writing.
It also seems that you took a vacation, in Ibiza and Mallorca. Yeah, that was after Beady Eye's separation. At the time, I thought I would completely withdraw from the music. I went to enjoy the sun with my girlfriend. I was convinced that this holiday would last a lifetime, I did not want to hear about Oasis or any music whatsoever. I needed a break. As soon as I left my house, people came to speak to me about Oasis. Fuck Oasis! Then I got this contract proposal to make this solo album. I packed my luggage, and returned to the country to get back to the turbine.
The Mancunian groups have always loved the Spanish islands, we remember the epic stays of New Order and the Happy Mondays. How do you explain this attraction? The weather, the sun, the food ... And then, there, people do not recognize me in the street. I could spend the day on the beach, nobody gave a fuck. It was nice, but after a while, I must confess that I was a little shit. I mean, I'm cut for rock'n'roll, not to tan during the rest of my life, you know what I mean? But what I like above all is that people missed me. People need a Liam Gallagher in their life, it's necessary. So I had to get back to it, at least for them.
And how do you feel today? Great ! I'm a fuckin 'punk! I've always been a punk, but even more so today. Nobody tells me what I have to do, I walk instinctively, I'm a madman, man. And if I'm back, it's to shake you up, because the music industry is shit today. I can not even listen to the radio so much it pollutes my ears. it's time to stir up all this shit. That's why I did not have the right to make mistakes, that's why my album is a damn good album. Best of the year!
The disc is called As You Were. Should we see this title as a certain form of introspection? Not really. In English, As You Were is a two-way expression. It is a military term that means soldiers can rest. I understand that people make the analogy between this title and me, but personally, I see it more like 'making a fucking disc, being back in business, then relaxing to enjoy it'.
We have not yet listened to the entire disc, but we have had a preview of five songs. Tell us about "Bold", apparently, that's where it all started ... Yeah, that's the first song I wrote for this record. I remember that at the time, I spent all my days on the couch drinking and doing nothing. One day, my girlfriend said to me, "Seriously, what are you doing? You have to get out of there! You spend your days ass on the couch, drinking beers and watching TV, You're Liam Gallagher, shit, you have to get back to work! " At one point, it all clicked : I took a guitar and played some chords. After a few minutes, I had the melody for Bold. Then there was When I'm In Need, and then another title, ... It's that simple. I recorded my ideas on the dictaphone of my phone and then I made them listen to my record company. They asked me if I had other songs, I told them not, but that it was not a problem, that I felt inspired. It was they who sent me to Los Angeles to work with Greg Kurstin, who helped me finalize all that. Because at the base, I'm not an accomplished musician, I had to give me a hand.
Do you sometimes need someone like your girlfriend to kick your ass? Yeah, I tend to let go ... I'm a fucking diesel man, I need to be motivated, but when I'm gone I can not stop. In this case, my girlfriend was right to move me, I became pathetic, just thinking about it, it makes me sick.
This bad place, it looks like a little depression, right? Yeah, maybe ... It's true that I wasn't in great spirits at that time. I had no band, I was alone, I was fed up. I really thought I had reached the end of the road, that the music was finished for me, that I had to move on. I was convinced that without a group to help me, I would never be able to write a song again. I was very mistaken, because the songs of the record come from deep within me. Eventually, it came out!
The songs we heard sounded like pure Liam Gallagher. Nobody tried to force you to do anything else? Not really. I know there are some people who would like to see me come out with a dance record like Ian Brown, a cliché baggy thing made in Manchester. But it's not really my thing. I'm the Sex Pistols and John Lennon in one body, I'm only good at one thing: rock 'n' roll.
By listening to "Bold", we find the qualities of writing that had been yours on "Im Outta Time". Proof that you are able to compose real classics! Thank you man! I love these two songs. "Im Outta Time" was a real click in my career. I remember that when I wrote it, I immediately felt immense pride, as if I understood for the first time that I was able to write beautiful songs. That's really the title that pushed me in the right direction, it was a bit of my winning lottery ticket, you know what I mean?
When you hear "For What It's Worth" and "Wall of Glass", you say that after all these years, John Lennon is still your super hero! Without a doubt ! It was the best of all. Whenever I have a microphone in front of me, I think of John Lennon. I believe he is my guardian angel, I feel his presence sometimes at my side. It's true that "Wall of Glass" sound a bit "Cold Turkey", a very New York track, with the balls of Oasis. And then, there is this harmonica like"Swamp Song", played here by Greg Kurstin.
Was that how to record in Los Angeles? The recording was cool, but I do not like this city too much. It is too big, and since I do not have a driving licence, I can not really move ... This city is downright extreme, everything is in excess, there is no middle ground. On one side, you have hipsters high on carrot juice, and on the other you have the addicts with a needle in the arm. It's a strange place. And then it's too hot, too hot, impossible to breathe! I thought I was going to die!
Were you taking off your parka then? No way man! Never without my parka! I hate walking in tee-shirt, I look like an asshole. So, in all circumstances, I wear my parka. But it can cause you some trouble in Los Angeles, the cops tend to find you suspicious and they do not hesitate to kill you. At least in England, I can blend into the scenery!
