Fourteen-year-old soccer phenom Freddy Adu signed a six-year deal with MLS and will join D.C. United next season, an MLS source said Tuesday.
The source, speaking to The Associated Press on condition on anonymity, said the deal would be announced Wednesday at a news conference in New York.
Adu, who was courted by Manchester United and other blue chip teams around the world, becomes one of the youngest Americans to sign a professional contract to play in a major sports league.
His deal with MLS stipulates that he be drafted by United so that he can live at home. Adu and his family moved from Ghana to Potomac, Md., in 1997.
Adu currently trains with the U.S. Under-17 national team in Florida. He led the team to the quarterfinals of the Under-17 world championship in Finland in August.
