Liverpool ace Michael Owen has hinted he may leave the Anfield outfit if the club miss out on qualification for the UEFA Champions League. The Reds are keen to tie down the England star to a new long-term deal like team-mates Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Chris Kirkland as they plan for the future.
Owen has 18 months left on his contract and as yet there is no indication that he will sign a new deal on offer to him.
The classy hit-man warned the club must improve their form if he is to sign a new deal with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona waiting in the wings should Owen decide to move on.
"In an ideal situation, Liverpool will do well this season and challenge for the league," Owen told Shoot magazine.
"But I really need to be playing in the Champions League and that is something we have to remedy.
"I have never doubted my own ability. I've done the business at the top level before.
"I don't want to be just a normal professional. I aim to reach the top and to do that you've got to play against the best teams in the world."
Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier is optimistic that Owen will pledge his future to the club and Owen revealed he will not hesitate in staying if the club are successful.
"It is impossible to say about my future at Liverpool," added Owen.
"If they are winning the league every year, there will not be any decision to make about playing abroad."

Rivaldo has admitted to having discussions with Liverpool over a possible New Year move to Anfield. The Brazilian international offered some insight into his future, although his exact destination is far from clear as he looks to leave Milan.
"It is true that I am talking with Liverpool," he commented. "But the negotiations still have not finished and I cannot say anything more."
