DAVID BECKHAM was given the No23 shirt to help him and Real Madrid crack the megabucks American market.
The figure is magical in US sport because it was worn by Becks' hero - £18million-a-year basketball legend Michael Jordan.
It is also the number chosen by rookie hoops sensation LeBron James, who already earns a staggering £11m a year even though he is still only 18.
Now Becks and Real aim to strike gold. The England skipper, unveiled at the Bernabeu yesterday, said: "I'm quite big in Europe and Japan but no one's really done it big in America on the soccer scene, especially from teams in Europe.
"It's important for for me to do something over there and be recognised in a country like America."
Like Beckham, Jordan is a hero in the Far East - and that was another factor when Real opted for the figure.
The No4 was also up for grabs but that was ruled out by the club's marketing people because many people in Asia believe it to be on a par with unlucky 13.
Becks is thrilled to have landed the 23 of Jordan, who is also represented by the same management agency, SFX.
