Didn't like them back in the day but compared to what we got (in terms of pop music) since then? I'd never have complained even once. In terms of professional pop songwriters I'd probably take Girls Aloud's catalogue to be honest, at least for certain songs. The Spice Girls were brilliantly marketed though, I still remember the buzz from their debut in the industry, despite some quarters being down on the material and bizarrely Kate Thornton of TOTP Magazine thinking they wouldn't happen as an all girl group would be "too threatening"! In some ways The Spice Girls career followed the early Oasis trajectory with a massive immediate impact, although in this case the girls began with an all conquering album followed up by a decent seller which they were unable to follow up with in any meaningful way once the initial hype and impact effect had dispersed. EMI/Virgin claim 31,000,000 and 20,000,000 sales for the debut and follow up respectively, whilst (rather irritatingly ) 'Spice' and 'Spiceworld' both outsold every individual Oasis album in the USA. Like all true pop phenomenons The Spice Girls burned big and bright for a relatively brief period before it was all over bar the inevitable reunions, solo records and appearances on various television programmes, etc.

I'd rather have late 90's Britney any day.
Carry on.

Making a fair few quid while she could, methinks? Oh, sure! But, like many pop artists out there, it was a waste of talent. Thought she was the only one who had genuine talent, and the only one who didn't have this ridiculous persona. Although she made some decent pop records over the years, I'd still rather see her do something a bit more "serious" and "mature". She was also the only attractive person in the group I thought, and the only reason why I watched the videos from time to time...

I loved the Spice Girls. I wanted to be one. I once even dressed up as one to school, with a silver coloured top, skirt and platform shoes. Good times. Baby Spice was my first ever celeb crush. I must have been around 10. You betcha.

I still vividly remember getting the doll and being incredibly happy.

"I've got sympathy for him 'cause he just seems to be going along with it. I mean, if she wasn't married to him, who's she? Just one of the Spice Girls who can't sing. Whereas he's the best fucking footballer we've got in the country. I feel sorry for him."

She may have been a singer who couldn't actually sing, but without her drive and her manager's contacts and knowledge the Beckham brand may well never have become what is, which itself in many ways set the scene for modern superstars in the game such as Cristiano Ronaldo with 'CR7'.

You're absolutely right. The quote by Noel was from 2000 though, when the Beckhams were a very fresh couple...
