So I made a post yesterday talking about how I'm currently recovering from serious drug abuse. (which is going well so far !) I also said I wanted to make a post about how great the lyrics to WDIAGW are and how much I can relate to them. So I typed out a lyric-by-lyric breakdown of the song haha. I would love to get some feedback on what you all think of the lyrics too !
"You know that feeling you get
You feel you're older than time
You ain't exactly sure
If you've been away a while "
This is a great opening lyric IMO, and it sets the tone perfectly. Noel is feeling worn out, tired of his lifestyle. But he's been at it for so long, he doesn't really remember how life used to be. It also could be a reference to Noel feeling tired of the Rockstar lifestyle, as he has often stated their fourth album would be a "departure" from what they had done in the past.
"Do you keep the receipts
For the friends that you buy"
This next lyric, I think is a little more ambiguous, but the "friends that you buy" could obviously be a reference to the drugs he has been buying. And the "reciepts" could be bad memories of things he had to do to get said drugs (stealing, sucking dick, etc.) As in, 'Do the things you did in order to obtain drugs haunt you ?'
"And ain't it bittersweet
You were only just getting by "
The final lyric of the first verse, I think the 'Only just getting by' is sort of meant as a way Noel has justified the evil things he's done. Like, 'It's no big deal that I stole all that money.. I was doing to support my lifestyle. The ends justify the means'
"But I hope you know
That it won't let go
It sticks around with you until the day you die"
This part of the chorus is pretty self-explanatory. Noel is saying the feeling/longing for drugs will stay forever, even after you've been clean for a long time. It's still going to be in the back of your mind. I can definitely relate to this one :/
"And I hope you know that it's touch and go
I hope the tears don't stain the world that waits outside"
The second part of the chorus, this is my personal favourite line. I think it's Noel saying, 'I hope I don't fuck up too many relationships/lives while I'm living like this.. Because once I get clean I'm going to have to face it all' If that's what he was going for, it's fucking genius.
"Where did it all go wrong?"
The final part of the chorus and title of the song. Some people say it's a reference to Oasis' decline in quality. But seeing as I love everything they've done, I'm not gonna accept that. I think it's just him wondering how he got himself into this lifestyle and how it ended up spiraling out of control.

You may well be onto something there. I never thought of it but the song is one of my favourites off SOTSOG and of the 00s. Noel's vocals are just very powerful here. Glad to hear your journey is going well!

Like the theory, although "the friends that you buy" lines could also be referencing all the free party hanger on types that took up residence with Noel and Meg at Champagne Superheights in the lates 1990s. If there is one thing that can make serious addictions seem normal it is freeloading arseholes living off that person, having them pay for it all and telling them it is all OK Good luck on the recovery road as well man

Great tune, bloody underrated.
One of the finest Noel solo Oasis songs.
Above the likes of Talk Tonight and Going Nowhere.

Glad to hear your journey is going well! It's weird, I've always loved the song, but I've only just come to realise in the last month or so that it probably is my favourite Giants-era tune.

"Do you keep the receipts For the friends that you buy" I've always understood this to be about all of the hangers on people who were always around while Noel was paying for the party.

Yes, a song that's grown on me a lot in recent years. I still think the demo took the song to a different level though. I can see why it brings back bad memories for Noel though, it's a shame because it's a great tune.

interesting analysis. Never thought of it that way, this could be true. I've always thought it was about his marriage break up.
good luck on your recovery!

I'm going to write my BHN analysis here one day. And then get subsequently banned from the forum. Again.
