Either out of ignorance, hatred, or simply not caring.... Good Reference: www.rollingstone.com/music/lists/100-greatest-artists-of-all-time-19691231And if anyone can vouch or convince others to consider what's listed would be an addendum requirement of this thread. Let's explore some of the iconic bands. Not even a greatest hits of the following. I have literally absolutely nothing. There's probably a ton more, but this is my list right now. Ignorance:Bob Dylan Bruce Springsteen Pink Floyd Led Zepplin Metallica AC/DC Guns N Roses The Who Kiss The Grateful Dead Jimi Hendrix REM Hated:Radiohead Rolling Stones Elvis U2

Btw you should definitely get at least The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, Born in the USA, and The Dark Side of the Moon. All classic records.

Because bands you hate, means bands you know, I am not advicing you anything cause it's a matter of tases, but about your "ignorance" bands , you miss some amazing stuff. For Dylan, take "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" and "Blonde on Blonde". Its a perfect debut to discover him. Born in The Usa is the biggest commercial succes of Springsteen but it's far from being is best. "Born to Run" and "Nebraska" are solid records, worth listening. The Floyd, well, it's The Floyd. Not my favourite band ever, but "Wish You Were Here", "The Wall" and "Animals" are great albums. Led Zepp, just listen the first 4 albums, which are fuckin' great, the best of the best being "Led Zeppelin IV"

I don't like Led Zeppelin that much either, bar about 7 songs. I once had a bf who was very much into them so I listened to everything, but they're not really my cup of tea.

There are many 'must have' artists whose records I don't own, simply because of how much they cost. I'll get around to them... eventually.

Plus I've never listened to The Doors in my life.... And I've wanted to get A Night at the Opera and Heroes for a long time now but can't be arsed. You should fix that. Listen either to the first or second album for a general understanding of their music. If you can't be arsed to listen to a full album, listen to Break On Through or Moonlight Drive for example.

The first side is really superior than the second, for me.

Physical Graffiti is excellent yes, but it's not the best album for someone who's new to the band (it's a double album for Christ's sake). I'd suggest IV first, then I or II and then PG.

Are we just limiting this to rock? Cuz I can name a million pop artists I consciously avoid like the plague. Yeah, Pop's allowed. Anything is allowed. But I'm looking for iconic artists (of course that can be open to interpretation, but I don't want someone to shout out "Bloc Party" or whatever lol Not the point of the thread). Following along with Pop, I do have Michael Jackson's Thriller (album) and a few random other tracks of his. But I'm thinking about exploring his discography a bit further.

I have Bee Gees greatest hits, based solely on them being mentioned in the DM DVD (2004), haven't listened to it yet lol I have some random Madonna tracks I downloaded over a decade ago when I was much younger. Don't have anything of the other two.

Ignorance:Bob Dylan Bruce Springsteen Pink Floyd Led Zepplin Metallica AC/DC Guns N Roses The Who Kiss The Grateful Dead Jimi Hendrix REM Hated:Radiohead Rolling Stones Elvis U2 Mate I'm almost jealous you've still got the Boss to discover. Springsteen's one of those artists that hit me hard, like Oasis. I got into him via a greatest hits, which tbh I wouldn't recommend. It progresses chronologically, which makes sense in theory, because one of the great things about Bruce is that you can take all of his albums in chronological order as telling the same story, of a guy and a girl (or a guy and a guy, Backstreets and Bobby Jean are particularly ambiguously-worded) across many decades and different shifts in age and perspective. However I don't think that's the best way to experience his work, as the shift from 'Born to Run' and 'Thunder Road' to excerpts from 'Darkness on The Edge of Town' and 'The River' makes those records seem more sparse than they are, and doesn't properly represent them. Also the greatest hits I listened to omits songs from his first two albums, and is thus shit. Because those records are (excuse the pun) absolutely boss. And you'll waste the first month replaying the first two immense tunes. So I'd recommend starting with Born to Run. One of the best albums of all time, it's incredibly ambitious and grandiose. It's his third album, so think Be Here Now, but if Oasis' first two records had been commercial bombs, and Noel wrote the whole album on Piano as a last ditch attempt at rock n roll greatness. There are other parallels, even if they feel slightly contrived: the album matches Definitely Maybe's sense of working-class escapism, even if Springsteen's vision is ultimately more fatalistic (although choosing the resigned 'Married with Children' to close the album after the elegiac 'Slide Away' suggests Noel wasn't immune to this fatalism himself), and Noel inadvertently invented Stereophonics, just as Bruce inadvertently invented Meatfloaf. While the album is far from concise, it does possess his best tunes, best articulates his vision of American escapism, without succumbing to the fatalism that colours his post 76 work, and is far more digestible than the first two albums. It's a great starting place. From there I would listen to 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' and 'Born in the USA'. Thematically, both albums are far darker and more jaded, although perhaps more musically conservative, read: less exuberant. Make sure to check out the many officially-released off-cuts from both these sessions, as well as the many unofficial songs (Janey Needs a Shooter is my favourite). From there you can bracket his albums off: The first two (great, fun, hit and miss lyrics with some great one-liners, formative to his later work), the 'calm between the storm' albums (not my term, 'The River', his second most commercial set, a mix of simple, catchy rock n roll and stark acoustic character studies and 'Nebraska', his 'difficult' album, stark, sparse, acoustic, very, very dark, very, very good), his 'late' period triumphs ('The Rising', redemptive, post-9-11 comeback record, 'Magic', severely-underrated late-period collection of tunes, 'Wrecking Ball', tuneful, furious response to the financial crisis and subsequent disparity of wealth in the Western world). And yeah, then have fun. Lots to explore. I know Noel claims to not be a big fan, but Noel lies about whole albums, I think he's covering his tracks because he stole so many lyrics from Bruce (particularly 08-11). Drop me a line if you have a listen to know what you think, same with anyone on here

Yeah you should definitely listen to Pink Floyd and The Boss. I've recently gotten more into U2 and haven't regretted it. Their early 80s punk sound is phenomenal as well as the Joshua Tree era. Achtung Baby is fantastic too.
