Alright, let battle commence. Riverman Definitely the strongest track on the album for me. It has some Stone Roses, mixed with really cool jazz. "Summoned from a smoky room in 1963" is a spot on description of the track. It's also the longest track on the album, but doesn't feel like it. It's a great tune to relax to. In The Heat of The MomentMy least favorite song on the album. Fits on the album but the melody feels rushed and throwaway-ish. The Girl With the X-Ray EyesIf Space Oddity and Hotel California had a baby, and that baby listened to alot of Supertramp, then when he got older, met The Masterplan and they had a kid, it would be The Girl With the X-Ray Eyes. Lock All The DoorsAbsolutely a Definitely Maybe Oasis tune. If Liam sung this back in '94 with the same exact production, slapped it on the original record, it would rank among Live Forever and Slide Away for me. The old chorus is back, and packs a punch. The Dying of the Light I was shocked at the production of the final version. I expected it to be in the vein of IIHAG or Wonderwall, but it sounds NOTHING LIKE ANY OF THEM. The soundcheck definitely doesn't do it justice compared to the glory that is the final version. The piano, drums, and sheer mysticism that embodies the album version is amazing. Definitely my 2nd favorite track on the album. The Right Stuff
It's a tune you would hear when the lights are lowered in a smoky jazz club in New Orleans. I have no idea how he's going to play this live in arenas. While The Song Remains the Same
Has some of my favorite lyrics on the album. A great track to follow Right Stuff's slow, jazzy beat. It almost feels like ITHOTM's bigger, more badass brother. The guitar solo on this one is stellar as well. The Mexican
It is the weirdest song on the album. This one sounds like ITHOTM but simmered down and given a funky, groovy beat. The Wah wah's add a great humorous touch to it as well. Riffs are amazing, and the cowbell. NEED MORE COWBELL! You Know We Can't Go Back
After more listens, this actually my 3rd favorite track on the album by far. It really feels upbeat and incredible. I keep thinking he's singing about Oasis in this, where he's saying it was great and all, but it's over and time to move on to better things. Someone last night said he should play this on a late night US show, and I absolutely agree. It sounds like a Billboard Hot 100 that plays on alternative radio stations. Ballad of the Mighty I
This one transitions in from YKWCGB perfectly via the piano and sound effect cues. I will say after listening to the full album, it doesn't rank up there with DOTL or Riverman, but it's still a great song. I guess the biggest problem I'll always have with it is where is the epic Noel chorus? It has a great bridge. We'll never know. TL;DR: Better than the debut, by far. HFB1 sounded like a older rockstar reflecting on his past career, where this one sounds like a boastful, confident, musician who looks to the past for inspiration, but keeps his eye on the future for innovation and evolution of his craft. Far more fast paced, tunes aren't overproduced and made grandiose for no reason (Record Machine, If I Had A Gun ). Good job Mr. Gallagher, you delivered. Believe the Hype, 10/10 - IGN Okay, now I would love to hear everyone's opinions on the album!

From two full listens...
Riverman, In The Heat Of The Moment, The Girl with X-Ray Eyes, The Dying Of The Light, The Right Stuff, While The Song Remains The Same and Ballad Of The Mighty I are all great (or at least pretty good), The Mexican is alright, You Know We Can't Go Back is meh, and Lock All The Door is bobbins.
7/8 out of 10 album for me - BIG improvement on HFB.

1. Riverman 9/10 - Eptimises cool. Nice little chorus and guitar solo is fantastic 2. In The Heat of the Moment - 8/10. I don't know why but since the album leaked i have liked this better. Fits in nicely. 3. The Girl With The X-Ray Eyes - 10/10 - What a song. Loved every bit of it. Very Bowie-esque 4. Lock all the Doors - 9/10 Great change in pace. This is Oasis 94-96, and who's complaining. Be interesting to hear Liam on this - he would blow it away! But Noel doesn't disappoint either. 5. The Dying of the Light 9/10 - Lovely little song that builds and builds. Probably the biggest anthem on the album. 6. The Right Stuff 9/10 - Love stuff like this. So unexpected it takes you on a journey and doesn't let you down! 7. While The Song Remains The Same - 7/10. One first listen i thought it was a bit of a filler but on repeated listens its grown and hope it continues, for me there is echoes of The Smiths in the song. 8. The Mexican 8/10 - Interesting song very groovy and catchy as well. I basically like it, and could grow on me even more. 9. You Know We Can't Go Back - 9/10 Love this song as well, so Springsteen, Potential single, so catchy and uplifting. 10. The Ballad of the Mighty I - 9/10. Thought it was great when it came out and still now. Perfect way to finish the album off. Overall Noel has produced the goods here. A very interesting album that takes you on a journey and leaves you yearning for more 9/10 Read more: live4ever.proboards.com/thread/80850/ranking-chasing-yesterday#ixzz3RjMB5lCG

First 5, may do the rest later.
Riverman - 10/10
Classic. The grooves are danceable yet melancholy and jazz influences with Pink-Floyd style guitar take this song straight to heaven, as Chasing Yesterday starts as it means to go on. The chorus pleads and soars all at once and the instrumentation is clear and luxurious.
In the Heat of the Moment - 7/10
I really like this one. It brings Noel's talents out of the 90's and loses none of the swagger along the way. The dance grooves (deja vu?) are ice cool and the chorus, despite being somewhat generic, brings that Gallagher-patented "I rule the world" feel in abundance - and when Noel sings "That loving man ain't no ROLLing stone" to a sliding bass and a sneering riff it's one of my favourite moments on the album. If only he changed the Nanananana's.
The Girl With the X-Ray Eyes - 8/10
Great tune, The Girl in the Dirty Shirt's sober cousin. The solo is immense and the melody spirals care-free through optimist music, until a heavy guitar slides straight out of 1997 and the chorus lifts the song up immeasurably.
Lock All the Doors - 8.5/10
There had to be one. Just one for all those people to say "Liam shuda sung it", and although the Oasis feel is there the song stands comfortably amongst The high Flying Birds. Unfortunately there really aren't many words to describe the chorus so just listen. Noel handles it just fine with the help of great vocal effects that no doubt would have been overblown under the all-destroying hands of Sardy.
The Dying of the Light - 9/10
This could have so easily have been If I Had a Gun pt.2, fortunately it leaves that tune to contemplate using the gun for suicide. The song is restrained, dark, gorgeous and shows off gorgeously 2 of the albums strong points - the production and Noel's vocals. Every sound is clear, fresh and textural and Noel strikes a perfect balances between emotion and melody. Highlight.

My preliminary review after 3 full listens. Hard to be objective when the album just came out but I did my best. Very positive overall rating.
Riverman The perfect opener to this album and an absolute classic. Thank the lord for Morrissey and his introducing Noel to Pinball. You can hear that song's influence in the verses and it gives this song such a lovely groove. The melody in the chorus is pure gold "all of the love that was left behind is gone" as is the sax. What a moody trip this song is. 10/10
In The Heat of The Moment Solid tune, liked it when it came out and I still do. Thing is, it's surrounded by excellent tracks so I can't help but feel underwhelmed by it. 6/10
The Girl With the X-Ray Eyes The Bowie comparisons are so on point. I'm so glad Noel is confident enough to try these funky sort of dissonant melodies because he absolutely kills it here! Seriously this is another classic guys, if you don't think so now you will eventually. 10/10
Lock All The Doors Finally a real rocker from Noel. I can't wait to hear what this one sounds like live, it should be mega. I agree that it sounds like a DM tune and Liam's 90s voice would propel a tune like this to infamy. Fun to sing My Sister Lover over the verses. My only complaint is that the vocals are a little faint, hoping it's just the shitty rip quality. 8/10
The Dying Of The Light I loved If I Had A Gun at first so I'm going to try to suspend judgement as much as I can on this one. I will say this, I got chills on the first listen and the piano is a wonderful addition to the song. 8/10
The Right Stuff Loved it at first listen and love it even more now. I don't know which lucky lady is harmonizing with Noel in the verses but it sounds really really good. I honestly wouldn't mind if it were twice as long. Great sound and mood on this track. 10/10
While The Song Remains The Same Wasn't sure about it on the first listen but it's growing on me. Beautiful lyrics. 7/10
The Mexican Interesting name for an interesting track. Along with ITHOTM the weakest on the album but it's still good. 6/10
You Know We Can't Go Back The best surprise of the record imo. I Hope I Think I Know meets Stay Young. It sounds SO early early Noel to me, something I'd expect to find a shitty demo of on the pre-DM tapes. Which is ironic considering the title. Really, this track is pure Noel and I love it. Got pretty emotional when it started. 9/10
Ballad Of The Mighty I Not sure why it's a single tbh (excluding Marr). There are so many better choices. I do like the song though and think it is excellent within the context of the album. Strong closing track. 8/10

After a few listens, ok, well maybe like 10, or 20? 25? Anyway, I think I can give an honest score for the album.
Riverman (5/5) In the Heat of the Moment (3.5/5) The Girl with X-Ray Eyes (3/5) Lock All the Doors (4.5/5) The Dying of the Light (5/5) The Right Stuff (4.5/5) While the Song Remains the Same (4/5) The Mexican (3.5/5) You Know We Can't Go Back (4.5/5) Ballad of the Mighty I (3.5/5)
So overall that's like what, 4/5? Such a well produced album. Riverman and TDOTL are classics IMO. ITHOTM is still really catchy just uninspired compared to the rest of the album. I wish DTD could've officially been on it somewhere. X-Ray Eyes is my least favorite track, it sounds nice tho, so that speaks volumes about this album. LATD is missing LGs touch without a doubt but Noel holds his own here. The biggest surprise for me is the Right Stuff, such a hypnotizing track, it could go on forever, it's pure sex for the ear. The Song Remains the Same was kind of a grower for me, but I can totally accept it now. It's like Part of the Queue, both took me a while to take in. The Mexican is what it is lol. Like ITHOTM, it's harmless. I picture a stripper wailing on a cowbell. Finally, Mighty I is perfectly fine as a closer, but I just can't see why it was a single. I respect it for sure, but I feel We Can't Go Back should've been the real closing track. It plays so well with the title 'Chasing Yesterday'. I'm loving it... Best Valentine's Day ever!

When I said I'd like to see Eno work with Noel at some point, but that they were too different - maybe not...that intro to While The Song Remains the Same shows that Noel is at least aware/open to his musical style and if Chasing Yesterday tells us one thing its that Noely G is no longer terrified of change.
Eno/Gallagher 2018.
