...than listen to an interview with Alex Turner. Noel Gallagher believes today’s rock bands are so dull that he would “rather drink petrol” than listen to an interview with Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner. The 47-year-old singer claimed there are no real characters left in music because of the power held by the big record labels. In an exclusive interview with the Standard, the former Oasis guitarist said: “There is a lot of shit pop music these days that’s just devouring everything at the minute. I’m hoping that will come to an end. “There doesn’t seem to be any characters any more. When you have proper characters, the music sort of becomes secondary — it looks after itself. Look at bands like The Smiths and The Jam — all great characters. “I would rather drink petrol straight from the nozzle at a garage than listen to an interview with Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys. Wouldn’t you? Alternative thinking is on its way out. They just don’t make for great copy. “Is it any coincidence that all the indie labels got bought up by the major labels and things have started to get boring?” full article

I'm working as a music publisher and I can assure you that there are still amazing Pop songs and great Pop songwriters that just can't get the cut, cause the labels prefer "something different."
E.g. A mediocre EDM track is far more likely to be accepted by some A&R than a brilliant Pop-Rock song.
However, fighting with the fact that the music business is - de facto - aimed at earning money, is noble, but utterly pointless. It's always been like that and always will be.

I saw this yesterday, was hoping no one would post it, thanks eva He likes the music but obviously thinks Turner comes across as boring when doing interviews. Which is fair enough, not like loads of other people haven't said the same thing also. But basically it's just Noel getting his name out there because he has a record coming out soon, he knows what he's doing. Sort of ruins his point when he says bands like The Smiths and The Jam had great characters though. Morrissey is probably the biggest bell end I've ever come across, but still doesn't take away from his musical/lyrical ability.

But I still believe great music can be heard though, nowadays. you just gotta dig and look for it. with technology these days, someone who really wants his / her music to be heard can, in few clicks and with a few production talents.

Absolutely, but what I mean is that (in the Pop territory) the singers rarely write their own tunes, they're basically dependent on what their A&R's offer them. Behind the songs are the songwriters - the real craftsmen of the industry. My point is that there are amazing songs that probably will never get released. They are already there, written and produced, but they just don't fit the current mainstream.

Noel is right that there are no characters like Morrissey or Weller these days, but you can't force some pop or rock star to create a false persona.
I'd rather our pop stars are just true to themselves - say, for example, Fran Healy from Travis. He's not a 'character' but he's a modest, nice guy, and I'd rather that than him be a try hard and start doing or saying outrageous things for attention. Likewise, Alex Turner's not a character but he makes brilliant music in my opinion. That's all that matters surely?
Anyway, wasn't it Noel who wrote 'you need to be yourself/ you can't be no one else"?
Noel's demands for characters won't result in more Morrisseys or Gallagher brothers, but more fuckwits that merely copy the Gallagher speech like that shit band Brother or those idiots from Kasabian.

Fair play about there not being characters.
Not okay with him having a go at other artists for not acting like dicks.
Bad call Noel.

But what I do know is that he can write a damn good tune!

I don't think he's on Arctic Monkeys music that much here, but go and listen to any Alex Turner's interview. It is horrible indeed. I once tried and i regret it, and i did vomit too, and the bottle of petrol feels like a great thing to do in compare to this experience indeed.
