Just like the WTSMG thread, here's a place for us to compile all we know about the songs and bsides off this underrated classic
D'You Know What I Mean?Paolo Hewitt's book tells how Noel gradually worked this song over soundchecks in '96. Not a lot of detail offered but he does mention the original words before they were changed to "all my people right here right now, d'you know what i mean?"
Debuted live at the Oakland Coliseum on June 18th and 19th 1997, along with BHN (the song).
On the Time Flies DVD commentary, Noel says "there's a good tune in there, somewhere"
My Big MouthApparently this one was also born out of soundchecks, done acoustically first. Also described in Hewitt's book.
Played live at the 96 mega gigs for the first time, then dropped during the BHN tour until the last night
of Dublin the Point, dec 5th 97. (they did 3 nights total, Liam sang first, Noel sang the same setlist the second night, and the third is the famous night where he changed a few songs)
Also played Chicago 96, sung by Noel.
Brought back in 2008 as we all know, with a changed arrangement. Apparently this was Andy's idea.
A rough mix of this, Noel sung, was leaked on the forum some time last year. Do we know exactly where or when this may be from?
Magic PieNoel once cites this as one of the best he ever wrote, alongside Live Forever and Wonderwall. Source of this claim/interview?
Done live on the first leg of the BHN tour only, form Oslo Spektrum to Cardiff, near the end, mid Dec I think. Done acoustically on Radio NRG, Paris on Nov 4th 1997.
Rough mix exists, can be downloaded somewhere on forum.
Stand By MeAn old song, apparently from 1992. I've heard this lots but does anyone have a source for it, or scan of Noel's old notebook indicating this?
Played throughout BHN tour, but the most famous version is the Liam sung acoustic performnce by the pool (Bonehead's house in Cheshire?)
Like My Big Mouth, a rough mix was leaked last year. What do we know about it?
I Hope I Think I KnowWas originally going to be the first single off BHN, a promo was issued with a pic of dice and a red cover, fetches up to $100 these days.
Never done live, sadly.
The last of the songs we have a rough mix of, Noel sung too, with a few different lines.
The Girl in the Dirty ShirtThe story behind this one is in Paolo Hewitt's book, as to where the title came from. Can't remember it exactly but Noel dedicated a song to Meg during one of the MG gigs (likely 96) as "The girl in the dirty shirt, she knows what she's worth to me" - something like that
Only ever played live once, at the Point, Dublin Dec 5th 1997, sung by Noel.
Fade in-OutVery versatile long song, first done full band with Liam then later on in Feb 1998, as a Noel acoustic (with keyboard and percussion) medley'd with Setting Sun. Budokan version is the best example of this.
Of course features Johnny Depp on slide guitar.
Don't Go AwayWritten during the MG days (or possibly before) about when Noel was worried that Peggy might have had cancer...can someone clarify?
Released as a video and promo, was a big hit in Canada (US too I assume?), single only in Japan.
Played live first on Saturday Night Live (but without the middle 8), then in New York Hammersmith Ballroom I think. After the BHN tour it was not played until Dec 2006, when Noel played it in Shibuya, Japan for the LDSMD promo screening. Played a few times since, on the TCT gigs only I think.
Be Here NowAlong with IGBM, was previewed as part of the BBC's 'Right Here Right Now' Oasis special, filmed at Air Studios.
Debuted earlier at the Oakland Coliseum gig (June 18th and 19th 1997) opening up for U2, along with DYKWIM.
All Around the WorldAn old one from 1992, Noel had intended it for the 2nd or 3rd album (he has said 3rd but his notebook reveals it as the closing track of the 2nd album). There is famous footage of the band reheasing part of the song at the Boardwalk.
Played during the first leg of the BHN tour only, from Oslo Spektrum to the last of 3 nights at Wembley Stadium in December 1997.
Watching the Time Flies DVD commentary, you can tell noel's not too thrilled with this one anymore.
It's Getting Better Man!
Debuted during the summer 1996 mega gigs, along with My Big Mouth and played at the North American gigs at the end of the summer (ending in Jones Beach, NY)
Like BHN, it was previewed on the Right Here Right Now special in Air Studios.
Played throughout the BHN tour but never since.
~again, its all off the top of my head. contribute what you can and we'll compile the info together.
Don't forget the b-sides!
