I've been an Oasis fan for 18 years. Now it's my pleasure to make this little announcement: Hello Manchester!!! This summer I'll be going to England and will be making a stop in Noel and Liam's hometown. I'm hoping to do some real music sightseeing. Oasis, the Smiths, Buzzocks, Happy Mondays, the Stone Roses, Factory Records and the Hacienda, Sifters etc. Planning to hit all the stops. There are some tours that sound really good but I'm sure there's more to see. I know it's a few months to go but I'm very excited. What are some must-see spots in Manchester?

Cheers on that !!! My favorite city in the uk seems like " real uk " as opposed to London which is cosmopolitan that you can sometimes forget if your in NYC,Paris or the uk as its such a global city. Not a knock mind you but to me the further north you go the more it has the English feel. Not gonna bore you with the usual music spots the tours can do that. And my memory for street names is foggy but in the city centre there is a holiday inn I stay at if you walk strait up the block and cross the street your in the heart of the shopping area keep walking strait it's easy ,as its on the same block as the holiday inn just further up past the shopping ...you will cind alot of small eclectic shops with some great stuff to buy ..I have a Union Jack flag I bought there from the early 1900s for 20 pounds it was not mint which is what gives it character ,i The neighborhood sorta reminds me of the east villiage in the 80 s ( NYC east village) if you find the city center holiday inn it's scant miss just walk up the block and straight past the shopping you will see the gradual change and Know your there. As it get seedier looking the more off the path you are it's not dangerous just not city centre as it should be There are alot of cool shops to explore there and think you will find it interesting and more productive than being with the tourist trap city centre crowd The nightlife could change much like NYC your best bet there is chat up the hotel concierge or do what I did when I go since every trip there's a new spot that's cool When your out at a pub you'll find most man s very friendly at least I did strike up a convo ask what's a happening place for music or for the ladies and I gurantee you ,you'll have a better time than going by the nightlife magazine of the city ... Hope that helps a bit have a great time man one of the best l" little big cities I've ever explored" I love it Cheers

Maine Road isn't even there any more and I wouldn't suggest a stroll around Burnage.

I went to 42nd Street back in the day - tacky as anything but played some decent tunes. Check out the Northern Quarter, some good bars and has a nice feel to it. Agree with advice to stay out of Burnage - sample recent local news headline: 'Family forced out of Burnage home after thugs hold gun to mum's head'. Enjoy!

Picadilly Records steals my heart (and my money) everytime when I'm in Manchester. Hacienda is an apartment now, but you can still take a picture outside. Safe journey and have a great time.

So Burnage is really rough eh? I knew it had its moments but I thought it was Salford and Moss Side that you needed to worry about. Any other info about where to avoid? Kind of good info to know.
I know the Oasis tour takes you round Burnage. And the Smiths tour takes you to Salford Lads' Club.
I'll definitely seek out Picadilly Records, thanks for the tips mimmi, and the pub notes Kalas.

No problem mate. Have a blast and you know what it's like NYC burn age might have gotten run down just use common sense you know ,, I've been there's I know it's gotten worse but it aint Harlem or the south Bronx and if your cautious there you can have a good time I say just use your head and you'll be fine mate anywhere you go

Ladies and gentlemen, I have returned. What a wonderful trip it was. I really liked Manchester. I was excited to see it of course but I thought it would be old, industrial, and residential but there's so much more to it than that. The old buildings around there are amazing. Its also quite an interesting place historically, as Manchester was at the centre of the industrial revolution back in the day. I think if you are interested in music, history, and architecture - you will find Manchester interesting.
Here's a summary of what I did...pics to follow eventually
*Visited Berwick St and tried to recreate the MG cover (in London) also found some Oasis stuff in shops
*Went round the Ignition management offices area on Linehope St, hoping to run into 'someone' but no luck (London)
*Saw the Boardwalk, its now Boardwalk studios on Princess Street
*Saw the Hacienda, Johnny Roadhouse (Boneheads guitar is on display), the GMEX, had a drink in Dry Bar
*Found a couple Oasis 12" singles in the great record shops in the Northern Quarter
*Took the train down to Burnage (took the advice here into consideration but couldnt go to Manchester and NOT see Burnage. Besides, if soemething happened to me in Burnage, it would have been a story to tell - Oasis fan badge of honour? lol), only took 11 mins, and oh it was so exciting.
*Went to Sifters and met Mr Sifter himself. As I was the only one in the shop, got to enjoy a good chat with the man himself for a good while
*Wandered just a bit around Burnage, down Burnage Lane, where Noel and Liam (and Paul) grew up. I was there quite early on, from 8:45am to about noon, so it was pretty quiet, lots of old people, very friendly. It seemed like a plain old, simple working class neighbourhood. I'm sure it has its moments but I never had any problem or uneasy feeling.
Tried to make it to the Salford Lads Club to get my photo taken and see the Smiths shrine inside but I was on foot, kept getting lost, and it started pouring rain. I was running out of time so I had to leave it for next time.
Like I said, photos to follow but I REALLY enjoyed my visit to Manchester. People there are quite friendly and its such an interesting place to visit. Pretty much went all around the city centre area. Ive been an Oasis fan since Oct 95, and a hardcore since I got the Masterplan album a couple years later. It was a real dream come true (and bucket list success) to actually go and see the place for myself.
Definitely recommend it to anyone!

The neighborhood sorta reminds me of the east villiage in the 80 s ( NYC east village) on a visit about five years ago i walked round a corner, saw weirdly familair but not quite right traffic lights hanging across the street on the wrong side of the road, strange traffic signs pointing the wrong way too, old cars that were out of pace, then a few yellow taxis, a couple of NY cops... they had a whole fucking section made up as 80's NYC for making some Jude Law film I think it was- very surreal!

Look forward to this pics. Were you not tempted to knock on Peggy's door? lol I wasn't actually! I dont know what house it is exactly - dont need to know, dont want to know - otherwise I'd feel a little creepy. I was quite happy being on the street itself. That was pretty mind blowing. I was wondering if I'd run into Peggy at the Tesco nearby. Or Paul. Or Liam. Or Noel. Either way, I was indeed mad fer it.
