Mods, please keep this in the Oasis section. Oasis related polls, imo, should remain in the Oasis F&F because it'll spur more debate....
To me, IIHAG was the best song on NGHFB, and I still think the same. The chorus isn't as catchy as Wonderwall, but it's literally in the same vein.
To me, this song stands proudly along side Wonderwall, Live Forever, Don't Look Back in Anger, The Masterplan, Slide Away, etc.
It's one of Noel's finest and it's a damn shame it wasn't released under the Oasis mantra.
One of the best Oasis-related songs ever created.
Thoughts on how it stacks up within their catalog?

Yes I agree it is a classic up there with some of the great Oasis tunes, not as good as the likes of Live Forever or Don't Look Back In Anger though, but.... I think the production ruined the tune when it could have been so much better - it was very plodding and obvious and should have been a lot more subtle and haunting sounding, a bit like the soundcheck. Let's hope the demo is a pleasant surprise.

For me I'd most class it with Wonderwall, its the one off the album that everyone I know likes, I don't think its as good as the last three you mentioned because I think they're sonically at the best they can be and their lyrics are touching even though they're quite abstract, with IIHAG I don' t think it's produced right, I think it would've been best suited produced along the line of Cast No Shadow, but the lyrics are quite touching. In terms of the best I wouldn't put it up there with THOSE but it's definitely up there in my favourites.

As a song yeah it is up there with the greats (not on the DLBIA category though) but Sardy and Noel messed up on the production. It's not horrible but its a little too heavy and plodding sounding to me. If it was recorded and produced say like "Nude" by Radiohead I think the song would sound a lot better. Haunting and fragile but it is a superb song nonetheless.

I don't mind the production. I think far less people would mind the production if there were no soundcheck version to hear. It will always be compared to that soundcheck version and I think the production wouldn't sound as bad if the first time I heard the song, it was completely alien to me.
The songwriting is classic Noel. He hasn't written a song as good as that since DGA imo. Very touching lyrics. With most people they would sound cliche, but with Noel they fit.
I personally believe that Noel chose the production values because he was afraid of it sounding far too much like Wonderwall. I also believe that he could have had the best of the both worlds if he were not so obtuse. A stripped back sound with tinges of experimentation would have been great. I agree with Cast. Radiohead is very good at having both the stripped back sound and the tinges of experimentation which is almost there for texture than anything else.
I think it's one of the 20 Best Gallagher songs, easily. Possibly Top 15. Even with the production. Noel showing that he still has something left in the tank and can produce an amazing song at any moment.

It's a good song, but it does have a common danger as "Wonderwall".

Not for me, not at any point. I don't think I would put up against many Oasis song's as I haven't listened to it all the way through since around January

Nope, never on the same level as The Masterplan, Don't Look Back In Anger or Live Forever.
Wonderwall isn't one of my favourites either but If I Had a Gun still isn't as good.

I think so, but it all depends on what your definition of "classic" is, doesn't it?

No, its a long way off the Slide Away's and Live Forever's for me. Its a shame because I thought the soundcheck recording was brilliant and quite harrowing, but the finished product is unnecessarily safe and dull. I think there's probably 3-4 HFB songs comfortably above it let alone Oasis.

I think once the shine or shyyyyiiine wears off, it won't be seen as highly as the classics. It is good, but not like those. It depends how it ages. I thought DOYS was absolutely brilliant for 2 even 3 years. Now I feel it really isn't aging well and it sounds stale. There is no song I hate, but other than TT, FD and SO, it is all just middle of the pack to below of average for me, and I never thought I'd be saying that about TSOTL, IOT and BIU.
Back to Noel, again it will be interesting to see how his songs stand up to classic oasis down the road, but I think at this point they will fall short. That isn't a bad thing, cause classic Oasis is amazing.

I think spaneli is spot on. I never listened to the sound check version and I really like the production on the album version. It would make sense that the demo version will be a happy medium between the sound check and the album versions.

Considering Oasis classics are Live Forever, Champagne Supernova, Supersonic... Absolutely not. Not even close.

It's pretty good but not a classic for me. I rate Everybody's On The Run, The Death Of You And Me, Record Machine, What A Life!, Stranded On The Wrong Beach and Stop The Clocks above it on the HFB's album. It's a good melody and lyrics but a little too obvious and too much of a trademark Oasis ballad and for that reason it's probably the least interesting thing on NGHFBs album.

I haven't listened to it through in months, I just can be arsed, i get halfway through and get bored... I've heard wonderwall and all the oasis classics so many times over the years that some times I can't be bothered putting them on but if they come on when I've got shuffle selected on my docking station and get halfway through I think "you know these really are great songs..." if I had a gun is the one song because to me it's all been done before by Noel, even though the rest of the album is mod tempo the other songs are a little bit different in ways to oasis. If I had a gun just feels like a bad version to the wonderwall, stop crying your heart kind of songs.

I LOVE it. Way better than the soundcheck.
Probably in my top 10 NG-penned tunes.

I have a strange relationship with this track. Sometimes I just adore it, sometimes I think it's too cheesy. I guess it's related to my mood. Anyway, there are tracks on NGHFB that i like quite a lot more (EOTR, Record Machine,...).
But after all i guess it might become a classic: I've seen many people expressing their love for IIHAG on Facebook, and they who don't even know who Noel Gallagher is and probably know Oasis only as "the ones that sing Wonderwall". So yes, I think it could become a classic in a few years time. We'll see if people will remember Noel Gallagher as "the guy who sings If I Had a Gun..."

The fact that IIHAG isn't the best song on the album, shows how great the album is imo.
