AKA... The score they give nearly every major review. They're sort of like America's NME.

Spin is pretty good, I find. They aren't too, too generous and they generally write pretty good reviews.
Rolling Stone, on the other hand, is unreadable and gives every artist who is not Oasis or Nickelback at least 3 1/2 stars. If you're the Rolling Stones, U2, Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen you cannot get under 4 stars, even if your record is a chorus of cats vomiting.

"What a Life" gallops with a grandiosity that recalls Arcade Fire, and "Stop the Clocks" is a full-on orchestral-rock orgy. Erm...

I guess he meant EOTR instead of WAL.

if you check their website, they've since changed it to a 7/10. probably higher-ups not impressed with the original review

7/10 seems actually quite accurate. I myself actually gave the album a 7.5/10 but hey.... it's all a matter of opinion and tastes. Spin has always been pretty fair with their reviews to Oasis. The album is good, at times very good but it is undeniable that it's lacking in several departments. If Noel was known for being a Amos Lee type of artist or had been in a pop/folk group for the past 20 years, then yes.... this album would and SHOULD be rated and critiqued differently. However, that is not the case. He was in a rock band, an actual ROCK 'n' roll band, by a lot of people's account, the last great proper band of the genre so.... the album is a nice listen, barring a few stinkers(aka WAL, Broken Arrow, Wrong Beach), so no it is not perfect and if we're being completely honest it's not THAT close to being a 10 or a 9. It's close to being an 8, depending on the listener's taste is how close to an 8 he or she may rate it. Perhaps on first listen the reviewer thought "it's about an 8/10, might as well round up", then after a few more spins, he found himself wanting to skip more than a couple of songs and that is never a good sign for an album.

Noel made a pop album(with a folk sound sprinkled on top), are you gonna tell me this isn't the case? i mean, Noel has said so himself. he didn't make a rock record. or are you arguing that Oasis wasn't a rock band? i don't get it. in any case, you're known for not making too much sense a lot of the time so maybe asking you to elaborate is a waste of time.

Why should the album be critiqued differently just because Noel used to play different music with a different band? The album should be judged solely based upon the content of the album, not what Noel may or may not have done in the past. I'm not saying that you should rate it higher yourself, if it's not your thing then whatever that's fine. But just because something is different doesn't automatically make it of a lower quality.

I'll explain it to you.... when you're going to an italian restaurant, you expect italian food correct? Now, if you go to the Olive Garden and they come out with some thai food(which can also be good), are you gonna be happy with that? The same thing applies here, you may not like it but the fact of the matter is, it does. If i wanna hear some dance or electronica(or some variation of what imo is straigh up lame music), i'll go buy the fucking Lady Gaga or Madonna album, not the Noel Gallagher. If i listen to Noel Gallagher is not because i like the stupid Falling Down remix(not saying it's crap), or even The Importance of Being Idle, which again, is a fine tune but not the main draw for me to buy his album. I go to Noel for his grandiose power ballads, the great hooks in his songs, the catchiness and (on occasion) the brilliance of his lyrics, the infectiousness ,flare and cockiness of his tunes. I don't wanna hear Broken Arrow or fucking Aka WAL, that's garbage. Im not sure if you get what i am saying. The album is good but unfortunately for Noel, expectations play a big part in the judging/critiquing of the record. If you ask for apples and you get oranges instead, you're not gonna be pleased, no matter how good that orange tastes.

Anybody knows what is the score that appears in the printed version?. By the way, Metacritic has not updated the score and maintains 8/10

I'll forgive the insult as I popped you first, but I'm pretty sure I am not known for being senseless. So go fuck yourself. Anyway, Noel is the artist here and can do what he likes. Imagine if every artist had to pick a box to put him/herself in and then stick to it. The Beatles didn't start out making psych pop records. Madonna didn't start out making disco pop. Bowie didn't start out in space. Etc. It's completely up to the artist and you're doing yourself a disservice if you're only willing to accept a particular type of tune from him.

OH, WHAT!? No.... OH Get the fuck out of here-Noel actually said that? hmmm.....

You wanted Noel to go in a different direction with his album than what he did, so you're disappointed with it. I just think a professional reviewer should put aside his expectations and judge the album for the music contained in it. Now depending on his taste in music he may still think it's shit anyway, but whatever. This whole thread just goes to show how utterly meaningless album reviews really are with as subjective of a medium as music is.

At least, it's what i was expecting. And for the record, i don't think a 3 star rating out of 5 = thinking the album is shit. if you read it you can tell that much
