Just poking about on the internet and came across this one.
Don't know the website. Verdict is 4/5 though.
Album review: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
We are finally just a few days away from the release of former Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher’s solo debut album – Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.
Noel’s voice is stronger than ever on the tight and melodic opening track Everybody’s On The Run. It is immediately clear that “the chief” (as Oasis fans used to call him) is trying something new: distorted guitars have been substituted with strings and choirs.
As the album proceeds with Dream On, even more instruments step into the sound spectrum with trumpets, saxes and a distorted out-of-tune piano in the background.
If the first two tracks were a bit dull, If I Had A Gun is the first moment of excellence of the album; an intimate, intense and melancholy song where he sings “’cause you’re the only God that I will ever need, I’m holding on and waiting for the moment to find me”.
Next the central and most interesting part of the album arrives with the radio-friendly single The Death Of You And Me – rumoured to be written about the relationship with his brother Liam, although Noel denies this – the fans’ classic (I Wanna Live In A Dream In My) Record Machine, and the latest psychedelic single AKA… What A Life!
This last song is pivotal for the whole record: it is oblique, relentless, perfectly written and catchy enough to be played twice a day on national radios. We expect it to be particularly gratifying live.
The album continues with the amusing Soldier Boys And Jesus Freaks and the melodic mid-tempo AKA… Broken Arrow (during the chorus you’ll notice a clear similarity to Oasis’ Falling Down).
In (Stranded On) The Wrong Beach Noel’s voice acquires a malicious flair but the song is nothing more than an ensemble of all the other previous tracks.
The closing piece, Stop The Clocks, is also the most anticipated: described by fans who have heard its demo session as one of the finest compositions of Noel Gallagher’s career, the song is really beautiful. It is capable of being intimate and epic at the same time – and carries some obscure lyrics “What if I’m already dead, how would I know? (…) And when the night is over, there’ll be no sound”.
With this album Noel tries to expand his musical horizon, experimenting with new sounds and arrangements – however he does it without standing up from his throne of Oasis songwriter.
Perfectly understandable but if there is something lacking in this album it is a new direction, whereas in terms of character it is a pearl.
