So I play piano and acoustic guitar, but I have no idea about what electric guitar I want to buy. Price range probably around £200 - £300 plus a good amp. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

I can't say much about guitars since I'm a lefty and my options are so much more limited. But I do have a Vox AC4TV, and I love it. It's a small and very basic amp, but if you love the tube sound, it's great. You can toggle between 1/4, 1, and 4 watts so it's good if you're going to be indoors a lot and can't afford to be annoying all the people around you. It's also fairly cheap, $250 (£150?). I guess that might stretch the budget a bit if you're also looking to get a guitar, but I do not regret buying mine at all.
Other than that I'd just recommend going into your local guitar shop and trying guitars and amps out until you find what you like.

Nothing quite beats trying them out yourself, see what feels comfortable and right to you. Ask questions, ask about warranty, repairs and all that. Don't forget to check out second hand shops cos you never know what you might find.
I have an Epiphone Dot (perhaps not surprisingly) which was about 450-500 I think, but Epiphone guitars are pretty good and reliable I find.

Yeah, you cant go wrong with an Epiphone guitar mate. Although my first electric was a Fender Squier Strat and it was lovely to play. Amps....hmm...i have a Vox Valvetronix which has never done me wrong.

I was i a guitar shop today and tried an Epiphone SG, pretty good guitar and only $350 or so. A worthy investment I'd think. But again, try a bunch out - cheaper low end guitars and more expensive ones so you can find the difference for yourself.

I agree with everyone else. I play a lefty electric, and I use an Epiphone. It's a just great electric guitar to start out with. Not as expensive as a Gibson, but it's still able to give a good impersonation of that dirty and heavy Gibson sound.
I also believe that your first electric, should be something that you test out for yourself. Test the feel out, and see if it suits you. If you choose to get more electrics, than I definitely recommend at looking overseas. There are some great, inexpensive models, that can be bought at a good price. But for the first, I definitely recommend that you play yourself, and try to find what suits you.

SG (G400) is a good axe, but it has a quite heavy neck and it's not well balanced. It tends to lean to the left when you're sitting with it. I guess it can be annoying when you're learning. Dot is a great choice.

First guitar for me was one of them Squire Stratocasters, not the best pickups but it was definitely the most comfortable guitar I've ever owned. Neck was unbelievably comfortable and quick to get around on. Think it came with a solid state Fender amp as a bundle but managed to blow it up within the first week of havin it (sounded pretty nice clean from what I remember). Now I've been playing for quite a few years, my main guitar now is an Epiphone Casino (bridge pickup died thanks to their sloppy soldering but other than that its a beautiful guitar), along with a Vox AD50VT.
Even though I had a bit of trouble with the Epiphone bridge rattling and the pickup recently dying on me, they are really good affordable guitars. Think given the choice now, I'd have probably got a 2nd hand Korean made one on eBay or something, from what I've heard they have a better build quality and the finishes are nicer than the current Chinese models.
Next things on my dream list are an Epiphone Sheraton (old Korean one in that niiice tobacco sunburst finish, or possibly ebony), and I'll probably upgrade the solid state Vox to a Fender Blues Junior amp...

as far this thread is getting more general, i'd like to have your opinion about the amp matter. Should i go for a fender blues junior or maybe for a vax ac4tv? I already own a voc AD30, but i'm not really sutisfied with it. I've got several stompboxes for the lead sounds like the TS9 and the Fuzz Factory, but they doesnt really seem to match perfetly with a solid state amp like mines. I'd like to have your advices and possible experiences

Don't Vax make hoovers? Never heard the Vox AC4TV but it looks a bit one-dimensional to me, not as versatile as a Blues Jr would be I'm guessin. All depends what you want from it. If you prefer the fuzzy sound of a Vox and would be happy with a lack of features (ie no EQ or reverb etc) then go for that, I'm sure it sounds great. Or, if you're looking for something a bit more powerful and versatile (for recording maybe?), then the Blues Jr would be better (would probably get my vote too). Thing is with amps, its all down to the players own tastes, recommending amps can be a bit subjective cause everyone has their own ideas of how a guitar amp 'tone' should sound. If I were you I'd take ur favourite guitar down to a music store and try out a few amps, see what sounds you personally prefer.
