I was at a record shop and they had DGSS up on the display wall with a small typed review (as all other wall CDs had). It read:
"All the coolest guys from Oasis decided to get together and make some loud, fun, rock songs. I think this CD was best described as 'car chase music'."
Lame, for sure, especially compared to the other reivews up there. I'm not going to rail at them for it, but I found myself thinking: does any other band get nailed with such criticism and ridicule the way Oasis do?
We know the mainstream media haven't been at all warm to Oasis since 1997 and that attitude has certainly rubbed off on the general public. Then there's the indier-than-thou types who disowned the band after MG made it big through Wonderwall (or possibly before, after DM sold more than 100 copies).
What is it about Oasis that seems to just incur the childish discontent from all sides? I can't think of any other band that just get heckled so much, and in a way that no other band seems to. Are they still hanging onto the 90s? Or sick of them cos they continued past the 90s? Is it the "arena rock sing-along appeal?

Why would a record shop put that up? Isn't that counter productive? Don't they want to sell it in order to make money? The mind boggles.....

I think: Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath use to be those artists that just got ridiculed with every release. It's only been recently, that is in the last 20 years, that they've become cool and in and given the credit that they deserve.
If I had to go a solo artist: it would be Tom Waits. The guy just gets killed with every release, and he's made some amazing music.
I think for Oasis it's a combination of everything. Some people just don't like them, and that comes from the way that they carry themselves. Both Gallaghers really didn't "play the game", and they really didn't care about what others thought about them. I also think that at some point, the publicity and tabloids became bigger than the music.
I think some people also see them as a band that never really became more than what they were, or what people perceived them to be. Some of it also is that people don't like to give them credit because they see Noel as a thief.
Really, if you look at the list that I just said: these were the same things that were said about Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. So it shows how much they know.
Lastly, the drop off in the quality of music can't be ignored. They started off so great and rose so quickly, that people got pretty jealous and annoyed of them. Most were waiting for them to fail, and hoping for it. And truly Oasis had a pace going that no artist could have kept up for an extended period of time (other than Bob Dylan). Ever since they have fallen, people who disliked them have wasted no time in continually sticking the knife into them.
There are a myriad of reasons as to why people just hate Oasis, all you have to do is pick one.

"All the coolest guys from Oasis decided to get together and make some loud, fun, rock songs. I think this CD was best described as 'car chase music'." Why do you think that's rididicule or disdain? It just seems like a funny, positive blurb. But I agree that Oasis got more than their fair share of ridicule and criticism. I always thought it was cause: 1) they were very popular, and 2) they were working class, with no desire to bow to artschool type pretensions.

I remember in HMV london they had a few Oasis album going for cheap,, and they had something like " though oasis have sounded tired in recent years blah blah blah." you would never see that written for coldplay or bloc party.

"All the coolest guys from Oasis decided to get together and make some loud, fun, rock songs. I think this CD was best described as 'car chase music'." If you think that's overtly negative than I don't even know what to say. Is that even criticism? They could have said FAR worse, honestly.
