L.S. Lowry paintings in the Tate Modern are being stored away rather than displayed. Actors such as Ian McKellen has demanded they be sold while Noel Gallagher has hit out at the gallery claiming it's not 'Tate Modern Standard' simply because Lowry was a northener. Ian McKellen said "Over the years, silly lies have been thrown around that he was only a Sunday painter, an amateur, untrained and naive". --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think it's pathetic and sad really. The pretentious folk who run this place think abstract avant-garde shite like Damian Hirst is real art, while Lowry is seen as an amateur. I think his paintings are wonderful and it's great to see Noel contributing to this ITV film about him - it captures bleak industrial England perfectly with a lot of charm. It's a shame that popular artists like him (who people would actually pay to see his work unlike most of the other crap) are neglected in favour of, apparently, more abstract works. I think these snobs should be more open minded about what it is that attracts people to art. Real shame I think. His work reflects real life - surely that's true art for you? www.itv.com/perspectives/essays/noel-gallagher-feature/www.itv.com/perspectives/documentaries/looking-for-lowry/

Thanks for the link. Actually enjoyed that Yeah it's really interesting! I remember having to pick a painting to describe in primary school - my dad had Lowry paintings in the hallway in my house so I chose one of his! I think it's awesome to see Noel appreciate his art. A really really great artist.
