I'm bored, so which one is superior - the a-side or the b-side? Personally, it's a no contest.
I think Cigs & Alcohol is rather lumpy and mediocre and the poorest track on Definitely Maybe (yes, I really do like Digsy's Dinner better). It's too much of a fat lad's rocker too.
Listen Up on the other hand soars. Rather optimistic but vulnerable lyrics, and that guitar solo is immense. It is a glorious tune of great beauty that is without doubt Oasis at their very best. Seriously, I could use all the superlatives to describe it.
Of course my opinion only, I think it will be a close thing amongst the users.

Listen Up probably has the disadvantage of being similar to Supersonic so its slightly underrated but its a great tune and probably of a better quality than C&A is but was it right for DM, probably not.
C&A fits perfectly as a rockin song on the album and a great single to release to the public in their debut year, Listen Up therefore fits as the b-side. A slightly better track for the hardcore Oasis fans and purists.

Love the attitude of C&A, and the sentiments really embody Oasis - especially during that time of their career. No way is it the weakest on the album for me, though - that 'honor' belongs to Shakermaker, and occasionally Up In The Sky, too (depending on my mood for that one, but an often skip).
However, I went with Listen Up, for the reasons you have mentioned. It does drag on a bit long, but apart from that it's of course Noel at his song writing best.

I like Cigs and Alcohol, but it was never my favorite and I was felt it could of been subbed for better songs live (in the later years at least). Listen Up always gets me for that one bit: "One fine day/Gonna leave you all behind/But would it be so bad if I had more time?". Brilliant.

Listen Up is the better song, but I think Cigarettes and Alcohol works better with the rest of Definitely Maybe.

But it's still way more exceptional than C&A.

No contest - Listen Up!
Never been that big a fan of C&A, always feels like it lumps along. Still more better for the album to tbh

Listen Up personally. I like the Noel's acoustic LU best though.

Listen Up, don't like DM version of C&A, much better live.

arguably, Listen Up has the better melody, but C&A is so much more meaningful lyrically, has such jaw-dropping menace in the vocals and is just about as rock n roll as a song can get.
