What's the opinions of this song from fellow forum members? Personally, I think it's an absolute epic song - the sinister cousin of Champagne Supernova.
I actually think the lyrics are a dig at those who slate Oasis.
The lyric 'blame it on the changing of the seasons, the thoughts that I convey' suggest how Oasis were seen as unfashionable at the time and suddenly Noel's forthright views were seen as annoying in the views of the British press.
The second verse:
'look around at all the plastic people who live without a care try to sit with me around my table but never bring a chair'
Referring to them as 'fakes' and the 'never bring a chair' reference is a dig at those who jumped on the bandwagon and who were always going to turn their backs on the band.
Finally, the chorus 'roll it over my soul, and leave me here' is a defiant message to his critics telling them that as much as they are criticised, he's not bothered and will continue to do what he wants.
That's my interpretation. Anyway, it is easily one of their best songs 2000 onwards. It's up there with Gas Panic, The Importance, Stop Crying and Falling Down.

I absolutely dig this tune as well. I especially dig the guitarsolo on it. Epic tune on a very underestimated record.

roll it over is epic. at a place i used to work at, a former coworker of mine was messing around with a keyboard we had in the office... i half-jokingly asked him if he knew any oasis (this was around 2002-2003 i.i.r.c. ) and right away he starts to play the 'does it make it alright' part of 'roll it over' and then the chorus!!

It's a good song. Think a few people are going a bit over the top here but its one of the standout moments of SOTSOG and in the top 10 or so songs of this decade.

The tune is brilliant, RIO & Gas Panic are on the good side of the songs noel wrote on vlalium. the lyrics are kinda crap tho: "Plastic People" - CLICHE "Never bring a chair" - Probably 'Norwegian wood' ripoff

I love this song, it's like a darker CS, the solo is ace and the vocal is great, one of their best in this decade.
Liam tried to replicate it on HC with BOADC but fail.

I like the song, but, ignoring the lyrics, it's very much similar to All Around the World (albeit slowed down a lot).

I never understood why the lyrics were "I could give a hundred million reasons to build a barricade"
It would have been so much better if it was "I could give a hundred million reasons to build a better place"
I do love the plastic people line - perfection!
Good tune.

Good tune. I interpret the 'barricade' lyric as meaning he'd like to get away from the bizaare and hectic lifestyle he once led.

Good tune. I interpret the 'barricade' lyric as meaning he'd like to get away from the bizaare and hectic lifestyle he once led. I think the "barricade" is being put up, because, as he gets older (as the seasons pass), he dislikes people more and more. His views (the thoughts that he conveys) are shifting farther and farther away from public opinion. The complaining about the "plastic people" who don't bring chairs shows that the people around him bring him nothing but still expect him to be generous and inviting in return. It's about a jaded mindset in which one feels different and alienated from society. Perhaps the giving up of drugs made Noel feel out of touch with those around him. Without having drugs to help loosen him up in his interactions with others, he felt that he lost a connection with them. The whole album has a negative feel toward other people (I Can See A Liar, Where Did It All Go Wrong, etc.), so I think my interpretation makes sense.

Massively underrated tune from a massively underrated album. Don't get why Noel calls that period uninspired, his best lyrics are on SOTSOG and you get the feeling they actually mean something beyond the usual vague theme of confidence/arrogance/whatever they sometimes slip into.
Roll it over is epic.

Don't get why Noel calls that period uninspired, his best lyrics are on SOTSOG and you get the feeling they actually mean something beyond the usual vague theme of confidence/arrogance/whatever they sometimes slip into. Roll it over is epic. yup. I mean this is the first album where Noel actually changed up everything. I mean it does have ICAL and PYMWYMI which are uninspired rockers but the only reason i think he put them on SOTSOG is to have a couple down right rock n roll tunes. But the rest of the album is pure mellow/gloomy/psychedelic brilliance (besides FITB). He tried (did) make Oasis more than just anthems and rock n roll. With SOTSOG he totally got it right but it still had that great exciting Oasis vibe. I don't wanna turn this into a HC vs SOTSOG debate but besides ICAL and PYMWYMI Noel is inspired and I can only say in my opinion that HC only has a handful of inspired tracks from Noel. Its just cool to listen to SOTSOG cos it is the hang over album from the greatest party (BHN). I mean so much changed Bonehead and Guigsy left, the band stopped doing Coke, they finally hit some critic backlash with BHN. Interesting to hear the change from a band singing It's Getting Better Man to three years later singing Where Did It All Go Wrong? SOTSOG gets way to much shit and I hate that it has its small flaws but has a whole the production, the inspiration, and the change in sound is amazing to listen to.

The best song they've put out post-Be Here Now. Good lyrics, AMAZING production, great melodies, and maybe even the best build they've ever done.

Absolutely STUNNING song. And it is one of Oasis' best album closers.... people seem to overlook it because they overlook the album in general.
That said, I was very pleased that in the poll series I ran for best Oasis song since BHN that Roll It Over actually made it to the third round

It's easily the second best closer to an Oasis album, Champagne Supernova being first. That's saying a lot about Roll It Over. Such a great, underrated tune.

Good song? Yes.
One of the best this decade? Fuck off.
All you lot are are greatly over appreciating this song, as good as it is.
GLIO, WDIAGW, GP, SB, LBL, SB, TIOBI, Lyla, KTDA, POTQ, FD, TSOTL, TT, WFTR, etc - you may reject a few of the songs listed here - and conversely you may think I didn't even include some 2000-2009 songs that are better than RIO here - either way, no matter how good that tune is, it's no way in hell the best this decade.
As far as closures go: -Champagne Supernova - WTSMG (5/5) -Married With Children - DM (4.5/5) -It's Getting Better Man (ignore the reprise) - BHN (4.5/5) -Roll It Over - SOTSOG (4/5) -Soldier On - DOYS (3.5/5) -Let There Be Love - DBTT (3/5) -Better Man - HC (2.5/5)
RIO is slow, it's repetitive, it's cliched, it's predictable.....it's nothing special.....it's average considering how shit the others are, but MWC, CS, etc are 10000000000000000000000000000000000000x better.
Some of you are over rating this under rated song. Come off it.
