For years, I have wondered when Noel was going to release a solo album. I always thought it would be an interesting side project in between proper albums. I now think that going solo is the only way he will be able to move forward musically. I strongly believe that being in Oasis is shackling him in a number of different ways.
1) As long as he is in Oasis he is a slave to the name. There is a certain expectation that comes with releasing an Oasis album. It is a certain sound, a comfort zone, that comes with this. And yeah, I understand that DBTT isn't DOYS which isn't SOTSOG but at the end of the day, I would argue that all the albums share numerous elements that define it as 'an Oasis project'.
2) This new found democracy within the group has begun to threaten his legacy and has seriously watered down the product. Now, I know a lot of you support the other band member's song writing abilities but I think, for the most part, it has become apparent that by in large, Noel's songs are, to this day, the cream of the crop on each and any oasis album. I think he feels like he needs to appease Liam by giving him a couple of songs on each album. Yes, IOT is an ok ballad but NOM is trite and really think how much better DOYS would have been if it had ended with Record Machine instead of SO.
3) I hate to say it but Liam's voice is in many ways a detriment now. And anyway, think of the great opportunities for guest vocalists/musicians that would present itself if Noel no longer had to work under the Oasis moniker. How great would a Weller/Gallagher duet be? and there are countless others...(and I suspect that Gem would join Noel on his solo venture anyway, so his musicianship would probably not be lost)
4) Going solo would be a great challenge for Noel and I think history has shown us on countless occasions that Noel has risen to the challenge when it has presented itself. (Think how he wrote most of his DBTT tunes when he realized they didn't have enough material for the album or how he came up with Supersonic in the studio when they needed a single in the DM era).
Thoughts?

I'd love a Noel solo album, but not at the expense of Oasis. Liam's voice may not be the greatest live, but he still adds much needed attitude and aggression to songs. I can't imagine liking TSOTL or Bag It Up as much as I do if Noel sung them.
The problem with Gem and Andy is that they're forcing themselves to write Oasis like songs, especially Andy. Sometimes it comes out good, sometimes bad, but never as good as the authentic product. Liam just had a shit time with DOYS, apparently. His contributions to DBTT were great.

I wouldn't mind listening to a Noel solo album but only if it didn't jeopardize the future of the band.
You made some good points but I can't agree with some of them.
1 - I'm pretty sure Noel has a big say as to how the album sounds and which direction they are going. I don't think there is anyone telling Noel how it should sound.
2 - Noel does write the best songs, but at the same time he has written some stinkers himself on the last few albums. I think some people automatically assume that a Noel album would be amazing but I'm not so sure about that. Maybe if it were still the 90s we could assume it would be amazing, but i think he's already done his best work.
I agree with 3 and 4 though. A lot of people have always said that Noel is probably the better singer than Liam so it would be cool to see him sing a bit more. Hearing Noel on demos gives songs a whole new soul and I'd like to hear more of the same.

Come to think of it, i would be happier to see a noel solo album than a new oasis album. It would have all the good songs noel is probably keeping to himself, It would probably be more experimental, It would probably have guests we all love (Weller, Marr, Chemicalbros) AND, It wouldnt have no MOS or AGN on it.................

Not as long as Oasis are still there.

only when either:
oasis learn to record albums faster and on a schedule of every two years or less.
oasis break up
oasis becomes shit (highly unlikely)

Yeah, I'm in the agreement with everyone else. Only if it wasn't a detriment to the band. In the end, Oasis is Noels legacy and how he'll be remembered. He's never gonna write tunes as good as Wonderwall, Live Forever, Masterplan, DLBIA, etc etc.... again. The touring might not hold up much longer but they can still churn out some good albums.

True that. I'd love a dual release, a noel album and a liam album go head-to-head in the charts. Bring that on. Problem is it will take noel 10 mins to make, and liam 10 years.

i agree wholeheartedly with this.
especially since a lot of Oasis was about how great they are (were?) live. they're STILL great live, but on playback they sound terrible.
i would love a Noel solo album. and for all you whiners, i think Oasis could still go on with a Noel solo album. :-P

It took Liam 9 years to make 'Im outta time' Liam's quick, and Noel's lazy. Neglect quality control and I reckon you'd have Liam's solo album well before you'd have Noel's.

Ah ok, true. Noel would put more effort in. Although, Liam would need Gem and Andy's help so would that count as some 'quality control'?
I just dont think Liam could be assed.

What's wrong with Soldier On? Nothing, some did not like it because it's not a Champagne Supernova. What hold Oasis back is Liam, he don't want to do new things/sounds with the band, he just want the same Oasis-ish songs, and it makes Noel's talent not to flourish. Go solo Noel!!

Noel should only go solo if he is going to get someone else to produce the album. Noel + Dave Sardy = Oasis and I don't want an Oasis record from Noel.

What's wrong with Soldier On? It sounds like a backing track they play in the background at the cimena before the lights are dimmed and the music starts.

I would love a solo album by Noel I dont think it would have any effect on Oasis as a band, I doubt he would go off on a world tour with it or even release any singles. He has always said that there are between 20 and 60 songs left over after each album session (Why no anthology style boxset then??) post be here now so I suppose it was only a matter of time. Her could also maybe try things that Liam would not agree with, I think his solo album would be good but in all honesty I think Liams would be better as long as he worked with good musicans and a good producer. Noels said in interviews how good his songs are. Gem could also do a brilliant Psychedelic album!!

Dont know why but, I would be ok with Noel going solo but, not Liam...I just can't see Rkid center stage with other musicians let alone another guitarist. And a massive WTF, didnt Noel once comment that he'd only write songs for Liam?
