7 out of 10. No more. Not now, not ever. Same for me. I don't quite understand why Oasis always releases the same type of first single. The songs are always classic Oasis, but with this new album and the supposed change in direction, why wouldn't they release a song that represents the change? People are already familiar with the quote unquote plodding oasis rocker. Why not throw a curveball and mix the shit up? Couldn't have said it any better. 7/10, solid, better than THT and Lyla, but not as good as FD.

TSOTL is better than Lyla, and even that wasn't a bad tune! So if you're rating TSOTL, what's THT and Lyla? 6/10? Even worse? Come off it. TSOTL is no worse than 7/10, but the amount of people - at least the amount of outspoken people - with that rating is staggering....."The song rating, blows my mind, falling down on what the rest of us know...." 9/10 for me - big sound and great attitude and vibe (back to the BHN era, and about time too), the lyrics are ok. Since Noel normally delievers with lyrics, we can give him the odd gibberish one here and there, and if you're judging the song by its lyrics then by your stilly standard BIOD, SMS, all of BHN, etc are crap too. And I don't get this notion of a "crap chorus" either. Sure it could have been drawn out a bit further, and sure the guitar solo could have been developed more - and if both were it would be for the better (hence I'm not giving this a 10/10 song, improvements could have been made). But the chorus is in no way crap! And nor do I see how anyone, including Noel himself, claims it's not catchy? "All in good time" and "Come in, come out tonight" are infectious! And the verses are MEGA Plus, Liam's voice is spot on - whether or not that due to studio effects or natural doesn't matter, he sounds ace either way. And the back vocals/echo (whatever it is?) sounds good too. It's just lacking that killer guitar solo - if it had that it would indeed be comparable and even better than It's Getting Better Man (Which is a tune I personally love). Follow the pattern - Oasis' lead singles are almost never the best on the album, for some strange reason, and normally fall around the 4th or so best song. IF TSOTL is 4th or 5th best song, this album is going to be monumental! Hell, it could be the best song and we could still be fine as long as there's 4 songs that are consistently as good (Falling Down to name one already)! THT deserves nothing better than a 6. I'd rate THT a 5/10 because it's generic, contrived, and not very good. It's Noel trying to recreate a RnRS opener for an album while ripping off a Stereophonics riff. If you think THT deserves anything better than a 6, than your opinion doesn't count. And yes, I'd give Lyla a 6/10. It's really not that strong of a tune. Not a good guitar solo, the ending is kind of blah, and the lyrics or ok. Plus the drumming is annoying. But it seems like you have an easy-going rating system. So I guess that's the way you do it. It seems like it doesn't take much for you to throw out 9s and 10s . . .

If you're giving TSOTL a 9 then i hope your scale goes quite a bit past 10. I really like the song but the only thing that separates it from THT and Lyla is the tempo. They're all on a pretty even keel but the novelty of TSOTL and the fact that it's a bit faster push it over those 2 a bit for me.
I just don't see the song as a 9/10. There are so many songs that are better. Half the Oasis catalog must be 10/10 then.

For me it's about a 7.5-8/10 song. Around the same standard as Hindu Times and Turn up the sun. Much, MUCH better than Lyla though!!
I don't think you can rate it at anything over 8. It's a good song, but IMO it isn't up there with good to be free, hello, columbia, bring it on down, its gettin better man, etc, etc - and i'd rate these at about 9/10 - amazing songs that are just below the 10/10 classics such as live forever, masterplan, etc.
If we're rating it on comparison with everything from the radio, MTV2, etc then I'd definitely give it at least a 9..... for oasis it's not their best, but above average for them.
I'm not getting carried away with it.. but i'm much more optimistic now than when lyla first came out.

It seems like it doesn't take much for you to throw out 9s and 10s . . . It's based on realistic expectations! Live Forever, Slide Away, Columbia, DLBIA, etc are all 10/10 songs. So conventional wisdom would suggest that songs must be compared to them, for they set the benchmark. However, that's not realistic. As we all know, DM/WTSMG were special albums that came at a special time when the band (read "Noel") had copious amounts of fresh material. Times are different - we're 14 years on - and for that each song has to be looked at individually and not comparatively. If we're judging TSOTL amongst Oasis' best work, then sure - it's a 7/10 or 8/10....no where near the true greats. However, if we're judging Oasis based off of the last few years only, then it's clearly a 10/10 (better than anything off of HC AND DBTT). Judging the song for itself, on it's own merits, then I think a 8/10 or 9/10 rating is about right. To me, I see ratings as such: 6/10 and below: Skippable 7/10: Average Filler, listen sometimes, skip other 8/10 and 9/10: Solid to really good album track 10/10: EPIC Based on the above, I can see myself always listening to TSOTL just as I have done with Lyla (8/10).

I personally love shock of the lightning. For me personally, it is about a 8/10. I can see the arguments for this song being a really amazing one, as well as the ones saying its crap. I guess I just really care more of what the song makes me feel, rather than how great or not so great it will be to others in the world of oasis.

It's not really about the chorus. I just love the sheer energy behind the song.
