A primary school joke turned tragic in China this week when terrified students stampeded down a dark staircase, crushing 10 children to death.
A newspaper in Tongjiang County, in southwestern Sichuan province, said the stampede began when someone yelled "a ghost is coming" as the young students left classes Tuesday evening.
As well as the 10 children who died in the crush to run away, at least 45 students were injured, five of them seriously.
The Shanghai Daily said a blackout had hit the school shortly before the stampede.
The local government is investigating.
This is the fourth serious stampede in Chinese schools in the past month.
One boy died and 64 other students were injured Oct. 17 in Aksu City, in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Two other school stampedes, in Hunan and Sichuan provinces, left 19 students injured, three of them seriously.

Terrible... I can only shiver when I imagine the feeling I would have when I'd make a joke like that.
EDIT: and when it actually ends up this badly
