Fast food giant McDonald's is to begin printing nutritional facts on the packaging of its burgers and fries. McDonald's said the labelling would include the fat, salt, calorie and carbohydrate content of its foods.
Critics have accused the company of contributing towards rising levels of obesity and other health problems.
Nutritional information on items such as the Big Mac, which contains 30g of fat, are currently only available in leaflets or on the company's website.
McDonald's said it hoped to have the new packaging in 20,000 of its 30,000 fast food restaurants worldwide by the end of 2006.
'Take responsibility'
McDonald's chief executive Jim Skinner said printing nutritional facts on the packaging of its foods would put the information directly in the hands of the company's customers.
"We think this the absolutely easiest way to communicate it," Mr Skinner said.
"We've given them what they asked for and then people take responsibility about whether they add it up or not add it up."
McDonald's has been introducing items such as salads and fruit to its menus, alongside the company's more traditional fare of burgers, fries and milkshakes.
Earlier this year, the US company announced that it was giving its iconic mascot clown Ronald McDonald a sporty new makeover in a bid to encourage children to take up more active lifestyles.
But critics have maintained that many of the foods on offer at McDonald's are unhealthy and fattening, at a time when obesity levels in many countries are soaring.
McDonald's, the world's biggest restaurant company, also said it hoped to introduce the new packaging by February next year, in time for the Winter Olympics in Italy.

You really don't need nutrition facts do you? I mean when you walk into McDonalds you aren't aiming to eat healthy. You go in there knowing that whatever you get is going to clog your arteries. The only people who take note of health facts are those who are eating healthy, and if you are you're not going to McDonalds. I think all this crap about introducing healthy foods into the menu is a load of shit. Who goes to McDonalds to spend 5 bucks on a cup of fruit and a glass of chocolate milk. They need to keep to the basics, like the Arch Delux.

duncan has been posting some things "of relevance" IMO... back off fools! ;D anyway.. I met this bloke from new jersey a few mos ago.. he made the big bucks in marketing and all. his company had labs that developed and tested "fragrances" for food. yeah fuck... apparently the smell of McD's french fries is 100% artificial - nice eh ? that's just disgusting m8s ! I;ve never been keen on their eats.. this was the last straw.. McD's is for when you are traveling and have NO other choice for 100 miles.. sorry..

apparently the smell of McD's french fries is 100% artificial - nice eh ? that's just disgusting m8s ! There is a fascinating book called 'Fast Food Nation' by Eric Schlosser which really goes into this kind of thing in detail (basically he does what 'Supersize Me' would later do but in more detail and also looks at other aspects of the industry, like underpaid workers and dangerous slaughterhouse conditions). It puts you right off fast food! At one point the author goes to a big food chemical plant and is blind-folded and has test tubes with certain chemicals held under his nose. Some smell like a sizzling burger, others like fries, others like strawberries, etc. He feels as if the actual food is in front of him when really it's just a vial of chemicals. Most of McDonald's and other fast food is flavoured this way. A Big Mac doesn't taste like beef because it's beef; in reality it's a load of mulch that has been processed to the point of tastelessness. But a quick fab of flavouring from the chemical wonderboys and suddely it smells like meaty goodness. I'd really recommend reading this book, it's a real eye-opener.
