I can't really comment on this Dom as I'm a newbie who's wife bought me a Tanglewood for Christmas... I'm learning just fine with it at the moment and I know she got decent advice from the store she bought it from.
My wife wasn't sure if I'd take to it so didn't want to spend too much money, I think she spent about £200...
I suppose once you have played your Tanglewood for a while you'll get a feel for it's sound and if you play with others you'll get a feel for the sounds of their guitars. As you progress and develop your ear you may then consider spending more money buying a better guitar.
As long as it's serving it's purpose at the moment I wouldn't worry about it too much just use it and learn from it... It sounds like the best £250 you've spent so far!

I had a Tanglewood but I gave it to my mates son a couple of years ago as his first guitar. I liked it and it did me fine. I had an old Kimbara as well but kept that cos it was battered from loads of practice.
Ive got a Takamine DSF48C now thru a mate at Korg's but I still love to play my old Tanglewood sometimes and it still sounds great.
Its all about the practice at first anyway.
Good luck
