the words or the music?
i, personally, think whoever writes the music first is cheating.

music comes first to me.... words i add later....sometimes i will keep a song for a while without lyrics.....its just me messin around with the acoustic and few lines come up, nothing final but just a good idea on syllables and entonation,..but i leave it at that,...nights later words come up out of nowhere and in seconds i put it all together... i almost always rework both lyrics and music works like that with me anyways... am i cheating? God knows.....

Sometimes I'll come up with a good set of lyrics but can't think of a tune to fit it, other times i just come up with the music and can't fit lyrics to it. It's annoying sometimes but worth it when it all comes together.

some songs lyrics then music, others the opposite.
When I write lyrics first I find that the words are usually more meaningful...

First the words, then the tempo, then the bass, the drums, the riff, the chords. And perhaps a solo.

the words come first, take ian brown for example, the bloke can't sing to save his life but his lyrics are top notch

the words or the music? i, personally, think whoever writes the music first is cheating. that's like asking "the chicken of the egg?" different songs & inspirations provide different writing techniques. if i write the lyrics first, it's always to a melody that i build the music around. if i come up with some good music, i'll build the lyrics & melody around that. so basically, whatever i feel like...gawwww! ;D

It's annoying sometimes but worth it when it all comes together. exactly! the same happens to me! ;D then i try to fit my lyrics to a tune i've made, changing them a bit. but good lyrics with a bad tune dont work. but a good song with bad lyrics is better (see oasis lol ;D some lyrics are meaningless but still the tune amazing!)

when i write the lyrics first, it always sounds too over-developed and the music never matches up. i like to let the music come to me, then let the words come out however they might to wrap around the feelings that i get from the music/the feelings i have about someone or something...it just flows together naturally, you know?

some songs lyrics then music, others the opposite. When I write lyrics first I find that the words are usually more meaningful... same here, i hate it when i have brilliant lyrics and i cant find a matching tune for it. I always have to watch out that i dont just put "the best fitting tune" to it or the best of the worse or whatever its called. It should fit perfectly or else no song and it ends up as a poem i think...
