have you tried different brands of cds?

when that happened to me, the icon for the writer disappeared in my comp - the solution to it was to unistall the driver and reinstall it (not sure if it was a newer driver i installed)
if you need more detail let me know:
in my comp, hardware, device manager, right click on the writer and see if you can "update driver", if you can let windows update find a driver aswell then it will be safer cause windows would have tested the driver.
if that does not work, i uninstalled the driver, & all cd writing software then restarted my machine - to let the machine reinstall the writer itself.
that worked for me, but if it does not for you, keep us posted and ill try and find another solution!

right click on the drive, and go uninstall - ok
if you have the latest driver then this might not work - have you tried the manufacture of you drives' website to see if there is a new driver? and also look in the faqs to see if anyone else has this prob.
has the drive ever worked? if so, there may be too many cd related softwares on your machine, see if any have startups (start-all program-startup) because these may "rival" the drive when starting windows!

have you checked the manufactures web to see if they have a new driver. cause there would be little point if you have no new driver to install.
id try the "too much software" approach to solving the prob!

what make writer do you have?
& what software is installed that uses this drive?
we might be able to find if there are any conflicts between softwares, windows & communication to the drive.

in the device manager (hardware in system prop), under cd/dvd it will name the drive that you have eg mine is SONY DVD RW DW-U10A.
this means that you can search google, or manufactures websites for any updates for the drive or see if other people have had the same problem as you!
hope i am still helping
