A new collection of international music has been dedicated to former Clash frontman Joe Strummer. World 2003: Music Without Frontiers includes Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros' Mondo Bongo alongside 34 other tracks from around the world. Compiled by BBC Radio London DJ Charlie Gillett, the double CD includes tracks by musicians such as Orchestra Baobab, Manu Chao, Mariza, Samira Sa¹id and Ellika & Solo. The album also features Uzbekistanian vocalist Sevara Nazarkhan, Canadian trio Be Good Tanyas, Tuscon, America's Calexico and the UK-based Temple Of Sound. The album's tracks range from a West African folk song about the death of a younger sister to an interpretation of a traditional Uzbekistan song dating back to the days when bandits preyed on travellers. It also draws on music from France, Spain, Italy, Senegal, Algeria, Nigeria, Turkey, Pakistan, Iraq, Portugal, Egypt, Russia, Kenya, Slovakia, Mali, Mexico, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Cuba and Brazil. Explains Gillett: "World music keeps growing, changing its shape, opening itself up to absorb new elements and shifting it's creative centres. World 2003 showcases what it feels like right now." World 2003: Music Without Frontiers is released on 28th July 2003 via EMI/Hemisphere.
