matt is spot on. Over two decades on, Be Here Now has still scarred Noel against being carefree and fun with a record. Unless he has a Holmes-esque taskmaster pushing him to go wild, I'm sure the next album will be something akin to Blue Moon Rising: something decent and different that could have been mega if let loose, but which Noel's safety-first approach stopped from being genuinely exciting. His default mode is undoubtedly too tame. Even with Be Here Now, I think that sense of abandon was due to the confidence of Noel at the time, but particularly Owen Morris who was the pioneer of that raw aggressive sound of the first three albums. Watching Supersonic and hearing snippets, it’s shocking how tame the original Definitely Maybe recordings were. Noel’s attitude wasn’t to rectify it but rather ‘we’ll get it right on the second album’ before Owen Morris came to save the day. That tentative approach has always been there, I think it’s easy to forget that given the brothers reckless public persona. When he produces his own music or has largely creative control over the sound of his songs, the results are pleasant but rarely spectacular in the way Who Built The Moon was.

If Noel continues in his rich vein of form from WBTM, we could have a 10/10 album.
Writing in the studio was OK and produced a lovely album. However, if he goes in with semi-completed songs and a producer like Holmes can add his magic onto them, it'll be fantastic.

He seems to be past the phase of using old tunes laying about for years, meaning less speculation on what will appear on the albums. All new songs recently written I’d imagine. That just means we’ll have to come up with our own rumours about song titles - a sort of ‘random Noel song title generator’ if you will.

Critically, maybe. Commercially, definitely not. It seems to be the received wisdom these EPs were a commercial failure but I dunno... Blue Moon Rising is the biggest selling vinyl single of 2020: completemusicupdate.com/article/fleetwood-mac-and-noel-gallagher-top-best-selling-vinyl-charts-for-2020-so-far/ Fair to assume BSD and TITP would have been at the top of that chart for 2019 if they’d been eligible. According to midweek sales This Is The Place was going to chart in the top 20 but then turned out not to be eligible because it was too long. www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/tones-i-takes-on-regard-for-this-weeks-number-1__27374/Noel described Black Star Dancing as his most successful single. We thought he was taking the piss at the time because it didn’t chart, but with it being the first EP it likely sold the most of the three, it was just chart ineligible. Obviously we don’t know the sales data, but I think it is likely these EPs sold more than most of his previous singles and may have all charted decently if they’d actually been eligible and released properly e.g. downloads and streaming made available at the same time as the vinyl. I hope when his next album comes round he promotes it with EPs similar to these instead of traditional two track singles where we’ve already had the b-side years ago. X The payout rates for “streams” are extremely low. Noel def makes more money selling a print run of 5,000 vinyl singles over anything those songs do on Spotify or Apple Music. Hard cash.

This forum ain't big enough to highlight his faults. Mind you, it's Noel's fault for hiring him in the first place. If you're just going to record songs straight up and proper with no bells and whistles attached, they might as well have re-hired Owen Morris. Rick Rubin was a possibility for Don't Believe The Truth - he'd have been great (for a start he'd have persuaded them to fill the album with the best songs rather than Gem and Andy filler). Heck, even Liam wanted Amorphous Androgynous to produce Oasis (apparently backstage at Wembley) - Dave Sardy was just a useful idiot for Noel's luddite attitudes. I bet that complacency is the basis for his refusal to re-hire the brilliant David Holmes for the next album.

I initially read "Dave Sardy" as "Dave Holmes" and was shocked someone would say he ruined songs. Sardy def has his faults.

I agree with you Matt about Dave Sardy & I can't understand why Noel hired him in the first place. I'm not sure if this was the case back in 2005, but Dave Sardy is represented by Ignition, so it might have originally been a bit of one hand helping the other. Obviously, Noel would have needed to want to work with Dave, but there may have been other considerations involved as well.
