I think one of the big flaws of trying to contain the virus in larger USA cities and prob elsewhere in the world is people are allowed to order take out and travel to crowded grocery stores where no doubt infected people are working or shopping. More this than the grocery store point. Grocery stores are a hot spot but speaking as a clerk at one, we're doing our utmost best job to sanitize the ever-living fuck out of our areas (like wipe off our area after each customer and close the store for 12 hours overnight to sanitize the shelves and re-stock). Anyways, I think it helps a little bit that restaurants still do take-out because people can order food and take a little bit of a burden off of grocery stores, plus those restaurants get money still and can stay afloat. Still, people should be wary and use delivery more.

I think we’ll find the largest outbreaks are almost entirely due to population density and nearly unavoidable. Seattle had the first case and we followed about the same path of action and trajectory as NY at first, just closed our schools a little earlier. But we are now at only 7% positive cases and they are at 30%. We both have take out and grocery stores open. They even did the full stay at home a few days before us I think. I just think it’s the density.. Same for NJ and FL on that path. CA looked to be doing really well but I’m not sure if they are reporting all their test numbers or there’s a lot pending. So worried about FL and all the retired people. The entire South and their Republican governors in denial, ugh it’s just terrifying

Can't believe that Trump "changed his mind" not to lock down NY.
In Japan people are queuing up to buy toilet rolls. In The Netherlands people are queuing up at front of the coffee shops to buy weeds outside as coffee shops are closed. In the US people are queuing up to buy a gun.
Stay at home and stay safe everyone!

They are warning people that the next step is closing down the parks and trails here because people have been outside and acting as if it's just a regular weekend. Think people getting their checks is going to make the grocery stores even more crowded.

I’m very intentionally staying apolitical, I just want to point out that Trump actually couldn’t legally quarantine any specific state - that is up to the governors. Trump can enact Martial Law on the entire USA, but is trying desperately hard not to go down that very authoritarian route.

IMO his motivation for this episode was to put blame on a blue state for the upcoming tragedy that’s about to happen in the red state of FL. A tragedy that has been greatly exacerbated by a governor who refuses to act and who has put tourist dollars over the health of residents. If you don’t believe trump would do such a thing, check his tweets in two weeks....

Thank you very much. Thankfully it's only been a couple assholes to deal with. Everyone else has been very gracious and kind when they've come in, which I'm gracious for.

If you don’t believe trump would do such a thing, check his tweets in two weeks.... You hit the nail on head. If Donald Trump is anything, it's transparent. You can read him like a book; he practically tells you every move he's going to make. It's beyond obvious. He's desperate to find a scapegoat that'll stick in order to deflect the blame away from himself and his administration. That's of the upmost importance to him than anything, it being an election year and all. That's why he tried to call it the "Chinese virus." When even the most average American saw past that, he moved on to trying to blame a liberal state like New York. It's not a dumb move for him; it riles up his base of conservative voters in red and purple states, and it's certainly worked before. Him holding up federal aid to those states is exactly what his base of pissed-off red staters love to see—and they don't two shits if more people than necessary die because of it. Simply put, he's putting American lives at risk for political gamesmanship. If it helps keep him in power, so be it.

Struggling with the boredom/mentally tbh atm.
No pubs, no football, only working from home etc.
Only thing I can do atm is go for walks and drives to clear my head but it's really not enough. 😕

I’ve managed to make a plan... I had to choose where to “officially” live so that I don’t break any lockdown rules. So I decided for this situation “home” will be London and travel to my hometown on Sundays to work in my school a couple of days voluntarily and then return to London on Wednesdays. Apparently that’s acceptable. The most vulnerable and at risk children still come in to school along with the NHS workers’ children who don’t have any other childcare. These are long days, and will continue all through the Easter break and probably Summer too.
I’m used to teaching teenagers but we’re open to all ages so it’s a change to care for little ones who are really really good at producing copious amounts of snot and dribble (and who show affection by touching your face, right?) I feel a bit at risk because of course these children are very tactile but I felt morally I should volunteer to be part of the team who care for them. This decision hasn’t gone down too well with people around me, there have been fireworks, but I guess it’s just because they care about me and want me to be safe.
This shit is real. It’s scary. I’m anxious at best. I’m worried about some of my students who are on lockdown at home who have a history of suffering physical and mental abuse, those who struggle with their mental health, those who will witness yet more domestic violence and those for which school is their only constant.
Here are some excerpts from a piece written by another teacher, this is what’s going on in schools right now.
- - - - -
“..and I have seen a lot of things. Staff and student deaths. Fires, floods, students with weapons. This crisis is different.
Today I am trying to arrange how the children entitled to free school meals will eat over the coming weeks. Many come from families struggling for food and I am so worried about them – the children who normally eat proper food only in school.
Today a number of us are phoning vulnerable families – checking they have enough to eat, are coping with the lockdown, that they still have gas and electricity. Yesterday one of my team visited a home to put £20 on the family’s PayPoint card, paying for electricity to keep them going for a few days. She also bought them food basics such as bread and milk.
The coronavirus has made the societal differences across the country more glaring.
The vouchers we have sent to families with children eligible for free school meals have arrived in some homes but not others. We are inundated with calls from those who have not yet had them. At least three have moved without telling the school, several want a set of vouchers per parent as “we share custody”, and one mum has moved into an emergency refuge.
It feels as if we are trying to solve all of society’s ills. In the end, I go to Tesco myself and buy as many vouchers as I can put on my own credit card, inviting the neediest in, one at a time, to collect.
Some parents call to say they can’t cope and they want to send their children back in for respite. It is difficult trying to explain that we can’t do this.
I’m exhausted and miserable and deeply scared for so many children. The ones on the edges of gang life, at risk of exploitation, in unsafe homes, and with little food in the cupboard. I shut my blinds, hide in the corner, have a cry and then have to pull myself together as one of our most vulnerable children, who is in foster care, has created a PowerPoint about happiness and he wants to share it with me.”
One week in..... at least another 20 to go!

Started showing symptoms last night and it’s absolutely floored me this morning.
Feeling absolutely brutal 🤢
We were classed as essential workers and took all precautions, washing hands, surgical gloves, social distancing... You name it and the bastard has got me.
7 days isolation, hope it doesn’t turn into anything too bad 🤞🏻

My better half is one of the essential workers as well. Although many of his colleagues are working from home now, his job isn't easy to operate from home. His boss is trying to make him working from home, but he needs so many stuff which we don't have at home to make him working from home and there're so many colleagues who need his assistant at work floor. As he was having a cold since last week, he's staying at home right now. He's getting better now, but we were scared last week. Stay safe everyone!
