Steven Avery, of course, is the man from the Netflix Docu, "Making A Murderer". The second series of which was uploaded to Netflix in October. This thread contains spoilers to both the first and second series. If you haven't watched this series, I highly recommend it - you will be hooked.
Of course the documentary is biased, and favors Steven Avery. A lot of information was omitted from the first series, whilst the second series is focused on how he's building a case for himself in regards to planted evidence, as well as putting forward another man in connection to the murder. Because of the bias, I don't really understand those citizens who campaign for his freedom, but that's by-the-by.
In my opinion, it was the exploitation of the unintelligent - the main reasoning behind trying to secure the release of his nephew, Brendan Dassey.
Steven was on the verge of winning a multi-million dollar settlement for his wrongful conviction in the 1980s, for which he served 18 years in prison. The state therefore has a motive to frame Avery. Whereas I don't really see any motive whatsoever for Avery murdering Teresa Halbach.
I lean towards his innocence, but that's what the documentary wants you to believe.
I await season three.

I think he is innocent of the charges. He doesn't come across as a very nice man, but that doesn't make him a murderer.
I think your right the crux of the matter is that he was about to bankrupt the local police department after suing them over his false conviction for rape. They had a very strong motive to frame him and some of the evidence against him was very suspect.

Guilty, but the actions of the police create enough doubt that I would not be able to convict him of the crime.

In dubio pro reo. I don't remember a lot of details anymore because my brain sucks But I do remember that the police basically told brendan what they thought had happened and he just repeated everything like it's a fact. Pretty frustrating to watch.
