sorry about that...but arent you guys all the same anyway? i get your point about a good team not needing to be full of good players, but my point was that this current squad isnt a good team. theyre average at best. making the semi's has little to do with how 'good' the team is and alot to do with who theyve had to play. just my opinions obviously... I think you said Sweden making the final would be the most logical outcome... Sweden are a team who beat France in qualifying, finished about Netherlands, knocked out Italy, finished above Germany, thrashed Mexico. But when England beat them comfortably they are shit

If you think there has been no improvement in the way England play then you haven't seen much of them over the last couple of years. The movement towards possession football and playing out from the back is striking. Still lots of problems in our team, lots of things to work on but its a very different England. we see the game differently i think. i have watched england over the last 25 years and even at this tournament, theyre still playing the same old boring, predictable, long-ball/crosses that they always have. when they do try and play proper football, it makes them look even worse than they are. if there has been improvement, its insubstantial... I think you have confused England with Germany in this World Cup.

This is the most balanced and cohesive England team for a long time. It's a side actually playing as a team, with defenders like Maguire and Stones coming into midfield with the ball while also being a threat on the counter with the likes of Sterling and Lingard with their pace and movement. We are still a young team so of course some aren't great yet. They have potential to be though.
Yes it's been a favorable draw but it still takes a good team to knock out the likes of Colombia and Sweden. Don't underestimate what England did against Colombia. Conceding a last minute goal like that and going behind in penalties but still winning showed great mental toughness unlike previous England sides. Sweden were made to look poor by a dominant England side. Anyway many sides in the past have had favourable routes (Italy in 2006, Germany in 2002)
I think anyone who can't say positive things about how good this England side have been is just bitter.

England are potentially 180 minutes away from winning the World Cup. How fucking insane is that!?

I am 180 minutes away from London but I don't have Uk visa and money for flight.

The nice thing is that no matter what happens with England tomorrow (or in the final, should we get that far), Southgate and his players will go down as heroes.
France will smash us if we get to the final. But I would have laughed at you if you told me at the beginning of the World Cup that we would in the Semis. Well in, Gareth.

I would expect France to beat England/Croatia. But in a one off game you never know.
Excited and nervous for tomorrow.

He took over a team that had just played in the uefa final but was old and overpaid. He was asked to cut players and wage bill AND keep us in PL all as a complete rookie and did so comfortably for two years before eventually going down. And then was second in the league when the chairman decided to sack him. He had his flaws, primarily his lack of in game tactical nous, but he is very intelligent and I'm sure he has learned a lot since then. He was a great u21 coach.

Don't know why you all seem to be THAT skeptic about the chances of beating France. If you don't let them counter attack that much it shouldn't be impossible. They will still be scary and potentially dangerous, but much less so. Argentina defended poorly, against Uruguay there was a set piece and a gift from Muslera, tonight there was another set piece.
But with that said, you should probably wait with those thoughts until aftet you've beaten Croatia. Hope not, but I think you will.

He was only 35 when he took over at Boro in 2006 - jeez, I remember it well as the man he was succeeding at Boro would go on to be arguably the worst England manager of all time. But he was so young and without coaching badges too. There’s a really interesting interview that Rafael Benitez gave to the BBC 10 years ago when he was in charge at Liverpool. He was asked which young manager in world football impressed him most, he answered Southgate. To say everyone was bewildered was an understatement, but Benitez was so impressed by his knowledge of the game and more importabtly his thirst for knowledge. Benitez is being proved right at the moment I think.

He struggled to command respect as their boss. When they were offloaded he found the chairman had tightened the purse strings and he couldn't replace them with similar quality so the team got progressively worse and everyone blamed that on his abilities as a manager. In many ways he was royally fucked over by Gibson, but he was too much if a gent to kick off about it. To make matters worse for the club, when Gibson did start spending again he handed the cheque book over to Gordon fucking Strachan.

Heard this morning on Golic & Wingo, an American sports radio show, how Gareth Southgate reached out to various people for advice prior to the World Cup, including New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who will probably go down as the greatest coach in American team sports......picking Bill's brain about coaching philosophy and what it's like to coach the greatest living human being, Tom Brady.
God bless.

Mate I apologise, fuck knows why I typed in Sunderland (although it may be down to the fact I’m reading about the North East footballing culture called ‘Up There’ linking the regions the industrial heritage of the north east to the clubs there). Strachan’s shitshow actually proved how difficult a job Southgate had - or actually, how well a job he was doing. I might be wrong but they were only a couple of points off automatic promotion when they sacked Southgate? After that they didn’t get close to promotion until years later with Karanka I believe? Arguably the case he was doing the best he possibly could.

Arguably the case he was doing the best he possibly could. no worries. Yeah 7 seasons we spent in the championship after that without getting near promotion. The whole thing was a cluster fuck from Gibson but he is beyond criticism really after rescuing the club in 86 so he got away with it. If he was going to sack Southgate he should have done it in the close season after relegation but he decided to stick with him. Then we started the season ok. Picking up points although the football was poor and we never looked convincing. The breaking point was when we played WBA at home. They were seen as promotion rivals and they destroyed us 5-0. Gibson decided to sack Southgate but didn't pull the trigger until he had lined up Strachan to step in. Southgate won his next game against Derby and climbed back up to 2nd but the decision had already been made and he was sacked straght after the whistle. After what happened with Strachan I don't think there is any boro fans that doesn't now think we should have stuck with Southgate for the season.

France vs. England kind of reminds me of last season’s Carabao Cup Final of Man City vs. Arsenal. Not good.

“Three Lions” by Baddiel and Skinner should be played instead of “God Save the Queen” at the beginning of tomorrow’s Semi Final between England and Croatia. It’s coming home.
