Im trying to teach my friend how to play bass but he's struggling with when to change notes in a song. For example, columbia has just three notes and each chord change theres a pretty obvious change in pitch and its also a pretty set pattern. ive tried to tell him everything but it doesnt seem to be going in. Is this even something that's teachable because its quite obvious and fundamental? I dont know how else to explain to him what to do... so can any of you help?

a) He is just not talented and there is no point to teach him. Playing music is just not for him, there are other things in life that he is good at, he should explore those things.
b) I can't stand when someone is teaching me something. I get nervous and anxious. The only way I can function and learn something is to be on my own and learn it by myself. Maybe he is that kind of guy, leave him alone to practice.

Does he know to count? Tell him to play in one beat quarter notes of the same note(for example A on the low e) and change the note per beat? Then add more divisions of the beat.
Or even better do one note on the one and sustain ir for the rest of the beat and change it un the one of the next one
A . . . B . . . 1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4
The A and B could be any given note you want your friend to play and the dota could be the note being sustained or not if you'd like.

Thinking out loud, but what if you asked him to "sing" the tune so he realises where the chord changes are? tbh I am a fucking terrible musician, have been playing guitar 15 years but can only play really basic shit, but even I think this guy's never going to get it. If he doesn't get Columbia, how's he ever going to get anything else?

What an awful piece of advice. I don't think he was 100% serious Although I do agree that the note changes in Columbia are super easy to notice (I think it was the first Oasis song I learnt to play on acoustic).
