hi everyone, so i finally received my 'as you were' vinyl last week and upon listening i noticed a slight difference in the outro of 'universal gleam'. the outro on cd has that little guitar lick at the end, while the vinyl runs a few seconds longer, has a bit of piano and a 'trail'.... i uploaded a side by side comparison so that everyone can listen for themselves and let me know what they think! www.sendspace.com/file/d5ikvragain, a slight difference, but it is there.... i find this very interesting, perhaps someone in the u.k. who has the vinyl can let us know if this version is exclusive to the u.s. pressings only? cheers!

whre's the idledreamer weekly podcast? don't hold your breath isn't this totally something john lennon would have done? now i'm wondering if there are other slight differences scattered throughout the vinyl and cd versions.

Great find! I actually haven’t listened to my vinyl yet as my receiver’s busted, hearing you say the album sounds a lot better means I gotta start saving up for a new one asap haha. Interested to see if people find any other differences between the cd and vinyl

Great find, @id1edreamer! Fascinating stuff! I just listened to the one you uploaded and my CD and compared to them. You're right! The vinly version (at least US version) has a slightly longer outro with piano. CD version and the mp3 version I received from official store don't have that piano. I'm listening to my copy of Japanese edition as I type, but I think it'll be same as other CD format, so without piano. My white vinyl is still unwrapped, so it'll take some time for me to find out if UK version is same as US version. PS: you sound very American, my friend! Edit: Japanese deluxe CD has the same outro (without piano) as well.

Nice find.
Maybe that specific piano track disappeared during mixing, when tracks are merged together. Both vinyl and CD versions were probably mixed differently and that little bit was lost for the cd version, maybe ?
It's a very good tune that deserved a bigger ending.

I like the longer outro with piano better.

i'm just willing to bet that for whatever reason the vinyl and cd were mixed separately, and there are other very subtle differences between the two. i'm listening to the vinyl again but it's difficult with just the naked ear. maybe someone with the software capabilities could do a side-by-side comparison of each track, with a program like cool edit or audacity, complete with screen shots? i realize this would be a lot of work.

If someone's willing to DM me a flac rip of the vinyl I'd love to do some comparisons once my computer gets fixed. This kind of stuff is really interesting to me!

So they sent a different mix for the vinyl master, whether accidentally (these things do happen, even at top record companies...), or on purpose, maybe because they couldn't decide on whether to go with the mix with the piano sound on or not, so cheekily placed the piano one on vinyl. It's more likely to be a mistake though. You can hear the piano earlier on as well, so in the final mix for CD/digital they cut the piano entirely, across the whole song, and made the ending a little shorter.

I've been analyzing the vinyl rip that Jim sent my way and I can confirm that, other than Universal Gleam's alternate ending and greater dynamic range (as is typical for vinyl), they're essentially identical. Also, this album is really, really good, however you choose to listen to it.

It's unfortunate the bonus tracks don't appear on the vinyl versions, would have liked to hear them with better dynamic range as well.

After two years. Finally got my white vinyl and had a listen,THE PIANO is real. Add more texture to the song which makes it better than CD.
