Not sure if there's a similar thread but a quick search couldn't find anything.
Anyone else started learning recently? Also it would be handy for experienced guitarists to provide a bit of guidance.
I've been playing about two months now.
It's fair to say my learning is slow as fuck. I can play songbird and I can just about play live forever at around 70 rpm. The D chord has completely been the death of me. Hate the little bastard.
I think learning live forever has been good though because it's helped me learn a few key chords, at least for learning Oasis.
I've had a few lessons and he's tried to teach me a few lead bits and also hammer-ons, pull offs, accents etc but I'm more bothered about learning songs using chords at the minute.
I'm using a really cheap harley benton acoustic with a really high action. i was thinking of getting it lowered but I thought if I can learn on this I can play anything. Just borrowed my mates fender strat so I can play late at night and not have to worry about grief from the neighbours.

It takes 2-3 months to learn the basic chords,so be patient. Learn some easy riffs like Reptilia by The Strokes,Intro by The XX or Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes. The last thing you should learn are barr chords. I remember those fuckers got me mad few times.

The hardest thing I'm finding is the chord change speed. I think it's because my brain is still trying to remember the finger positions for each chord. Would you advise against using the thumb to numb the top E string for now?

Would you advise against using the thumb to numb the top E string for now? If it makes things easier for you yes,but just play the way you feel more comfortable with. The hardest part at the beggining its the chord change, yes. But once you learn some songs and memorize the chords you will be able to play more and more. You know how to play Songbird,so those 3 chords are familiar to you. Wonderwall is the most perfect song to start with, plus you know 50% of the chords of that song. And you don't even have to move your pinky and your ring finger in the entire song. Just the middle and the index fingers. So I would recommend you to play Wonderwall, its easy, its fun and it always sounds familiar to whoever who listens you playing in the backround, they'll go like: Hey,I know that song lol

I ordered a capo and it's due today so I'll give it a whirl. I've heard the strummings the hardest bit to it but I'm sure I'll pick it up.

Its a bit tricky yeah, but actually just follow the strumming for instinct, the important thing is the chord
