Love that we got the chance to hear this, but fuck me Gem's biggest strength isnt talking is it?
Playing George Harrison's wife the Quiet Ones after he died? Poor woman had been through enough surely!

The quiet ones was written for George Harrison Well that's a dubious honour.

hehe - What's the best Oasis songs no one has ever heard ?
my question made it !
Great podcast, thanx for that. Gem sounds very calm, can understand why Liam and him got along great, he was the water to the fire.

Compared to previous interviews from years before, he cant find his words, speaks slowly... etc I'm guessing he has not recovered completely. Or is very depressed.

I just think he was the same old gem from years ago. Not very media friendly at all. Trying to carefully to pick each sentence right and most importantly not say anything that would piss Noel or Liam off.

Nah, he was way more lively and chatty in interview during the Oasis years, although yeah, he always choosed his words very carefully. But can you blame him ? It's his job that's at risk after all. He's a wing man and always will be a wing man.

Head trauma combined with his desire to be diplomatic didn't make for a very free flowing conversation. But I'm glad he's managed to be back playing, what he's been through is truly horrendous, it's actually a miracle he's recovered as much as he has.

Gem was always a bit of a space cadet, but I have to assume the brain injury hasn't done him any favors. The interview would be much easier to digest as a transcription, I think (not that I'm willing to transcribe it, mind).

Some really interesting nuggets of information in there. I bet there is a number of unheard Oasis songs though. It always amazes me that us "hardcore" fans often know more about the band than its actual members, e.g. Gem has never heard 'Snakebite', not being sure if 'The Quiet Ones'had been released, Eyeball Tickler lyrics. It's the same as Beatles interviews I've read where they can't remember which songs are on which albums.

When you write songs and albums, once they're released and you're done with a tour, you move on to the next. I've released an EP and an album, and I haven't listened to either since they were released. One of the stand alone singles we did, my drummer asked me about a song that I had sent him years ago that he loved (was only an acoustic strummy bit). I had no recollection of it whatsoever. Also, reminds me of when a fan mentioned Angel Child to Noel and he had barely heard of it and didn't remember how to play it either. In the end, it was a song he'd probably written for a week or two, liked it, recorded it, released it, and never thought of it again.

If you edited out the long gaps that podcast would be about 10 minutes long. It was good though. He seems like a lovely fellow and when he got going he was on it.

That's possible, but probably age too. He's almost 51, i know it's not old but not many people are speaking with the same upbeat energy and enthusiasm in their 50's as they did at a younger age. The nature of the interview is mostly reflecting on things from a while ago too, which takes plenty of thinking while speaking when you're recalling specific events.

He also mentioned losing his sense of smell, and that a knock on from that is some loss of memory (the two are very much linked I believe). He still seems like a top bloke, and as long as he's playing the guitar well and enjoying it I'm happy.

Interesting this.
Met Gem at TITP years ago. He knew I was in an area I shouldn’t have had access to and didn’t grass me up, so he’s alright by me.

I guess he doesn't have that much to talk about now. Previously he was an active member of Oasis, writing songs and supporting Liam in writing his, and in a similar place in Beady Eye. Now he's Noel's hired gun and nothing more. Must be weird. Also, he was heading off to South America the next morning so might have been distracted by all the things the rest of us get distracted by when we're off abroad.
Lots of good questions asked. The mystery that remains for me is why he was given a mic for such a short period in 2002.

Never got the whole Gem love-in. Be it his songs, personality or presence. Nice bloke and all maybe, but he was bland as fuck.
