I always just assumed The War On Drugs was mainly just Adam Granduciel and a constantly revolving door of sidemen.

Has anyone listened to the band's first three albums (i.e. before "Lost in the dream")? I wonder if they're good & what they sound like; Kurt Vile was part of the line-up then.

Has anyone listened to the band's first three albums (i.e. before "Lost in the dream")? I wonder if they're good & what they sound like; Kurt Vile was part of the line-up then. They're actually two, 'Wagonwheel Blues' and 'Slave Ambient' (plus a couple of EPs). I got into the band after 'Slave Ambient' and before 'Lost in the Dream'. They were playing pubs and very small gigs back then, so it's been nice to see them getting bigger and bigger in the last three years! A very deserved success. 'Wagonwheel Blues' is a sort of uptempo blend of americana and shoegaze. A very lo-fi record. Definitely worth a listen although the sound is VERY different from 'A Deeper Understanding'. This is probably my favorite track from it and it pretty much epitomizes the record: 'Slave Ambient' is a perfect bridge between 'Wagonwheel Blues' and 'Lost in the Dream'. It still has its shoegaze-ish moments but it's a lot more focused, less hazy. It's a real gem, not as good as 'Lost in the Dream' but I love it. This song is called 'Brothers' and it's not only my favorite track on the album, but also the song that got me into The War on Drugs. Those guitars are absolutely mesmerizing. I can't get tired of listening to it, it's one of those three-chords songs that could go on forever.

Totally loving this semi-acoustic version of Pain. Still one of my favorite tracks from this year so far.

That one sounds fine too, I like it better than the album version:

After a good listen for a month i think it's better then 'lost in the dream', the second half has a lot to offer.

Has to be one of the best songs this year. Very solid video, enhances the emotional quality of the music (and is it just me or is the volume really loud as well?).

Haven't made my mind up on the video yet, but the song is an absolute masterpiece. I almost can't believe how much I like it, and it's one of those rare tunes (for me at least) that has the ability to make me cry almost every time I listen to it. So Fast Car can take a break for now, as long as I don't overplay this one

I've never liked The War on Drugs, but after reading how you guys said that the samey nature of their songs (one of my biggest criticisms of their albums) is supposed to lull you in with the textures, send you into a trance, and take you on an epic journey, kind of like Loveless, I guess, I think I've gained a deeper understanding (heh) of their work. I still like the idea of hypnotic seven-minute krautrock-ambient Springteen-esque anthems better than the execution, and I still think they're overrated. But I can appreciate the steady restraint of Lost in the Dream as it pulls you into a contemplative haze. It'll probably never strike me as profound or have the same impact on me as it has had on most people, but it's a great record for night driving in the country beneath the dim glow of the Milky Way, or in the dead of night in the city with only your laptop screen to light your small apartment.

If you can't square off the whole two hours, take 30 minutes and skip to 53:10 for Thinking Of A Place and Under The Pressure. Ongelooflijk.
