Every band is to some extent "manufactured". That said, the Monkees were created for a TV show. All the tunes where written by other people. Then after a bit they decided to try and break the "manufactured" idea and wrote some of their own material which turned out to be quite good. So, to answer your question.... Yes. They are both "real" and "manufactured". Just like a certain band from Liverpool and their matching outfits(at least for the first half of their carreer). Nope, nope......Liverpool band was an existing, working band that Brian Epstein cleaned up. Monkees were actors. Mickey Dolenz likes to say that them becoming a rock group was like Leonard Nimoy becoming a real Vulcan.
