Another excellent tune from Ed O'Brien's upcoming solo album. This is the edit version, the full song is supposed to be more than 8 minutes long.

Even the bit about Simon Fowler being a better singer than our Liam? Strange that he should slight Liam's vocal talents as "laddy," when that's just the kind of sniffy journalist speak he's trying to discredit with his article.
But these kind of pieces are nice to see. There should be more done to reclaim the work of the countless musical acts who've been brought down by complacent music critics who just didn't get it (and didn't particularly want to get it) over the years.

A poorly phrased part of the article by the journalist there I agree, it's a matter of personal preference but he shouldn't bring such slights into it given as you say he's trying to discredit such writing. FWIW back in the day I was an absolute OCS fanatic but I can't see how anyone can deny the musical or social impact Liam had with Oasis, and the immediate recognition his voice or appearance garners with many people worldwide. Certainly re: your second point OCS were fortunate that they had connections (notably Paul Weller and particularly in the mid to late 90s Noel Gallagher) and established a dedicated fanbase before a number of critics turned on them, which enabled the band to carry on their career despite such negative pieces. You are right in that there are more artists who were perhaps unfairly maligned and deserve a similar reappraisal of their career and works.

I recently found a boxset for one of my all-time favourite albums, Raw Power by Iggy and the Stooges. One of the discs was a DVD on the making of the album.
Who should show up but Johnny Marr! He was featured a few times, citing this as a hugely influential album for him when it came out in 1973. The guitarist, James Williamson, is phenomenal, playing with such a life or death urgency and ferocity.
Mick Jones of the Clash, who recorded their first album at the same studio, was very aware of this when they made their debut in 1977.
3 of my favourite guitar players all interconnected.

Lost Souls by Doves was released 20 years ago today.
If you're listening to an album today, pick up this one. You won't be disappointed.

Looking forward to their new album later this year. I think Some Cities turns 15 in a few weeks. Where has the time gone? I remember when these dropped like it was yesterday.

A class band- I saw them for the first time opening for Oasis on the infamous second night at Wembley Stadium, of which my main memory is Jimi Goodwin asking the crowd for louder cheers in between songs so they could enjoy the whole 'playing to a stadium' experience more!

I try to listen to at least one album a day, as well as loose songs or bits of playlists (currently enjoying TIDAL’s Songs of the Year playlists; listened to the ones for 1957, 1958, and 1959, and have found them informative and surprising), but I waste so much time picking something to listen to that I usually end up putting on something I know pretty well already. Doves are completely new to me, however.

I had low expectations for this album, as I do with a lot of post-Britpop albums from artists like Travis and James (even if they do have good songs), but this album is fantastic. Rise is as brilliant as it gets for British music released at around this time and there's other really good songs on it.

R.I.P John Prine. This guy wrote some brilliant songs in his time, and seemed to be a genuinely great person. Fuck this virus.
(that last song contains one of the best opening verses of all time)

What happened to this band after second album, especially the fantastic debut album is, worse than Kings of Leon forming from "Molly's Chamber" to crap called "Sex on Fire"...

Has there ever been a band in history to be judged at various points to be considered the best band ever and the worst band ever?
I'm thinking The Beach Boys. From the sublime - Pet Sounds, Sunflower, Surf's Up, Dennis Wilson's solo album - to the genuinely horrendous output of the 1980s.
In any case, I think we were deprived of a great solo career from Dennis Wilson, if only it weren't for how fucked up his life was (Charles Manson and co). Pacific Ocean Blue is a hidden masterpiece.

Do you ever "like" artists and know they're good but you just can't get into them even though you want to? And then some day it just clicks and suddenly you're really loving them? Because that happened to me with PJ Harvey today! I had mainly heard Rid Of Me which I liked but I never really felt like I badly wanted to get back to it. Today I heard Big Thief's Not which is a great song btw but I felt like I already knew the song but was confused after realising it was from last year. But then I made the connection to Rid Of Me which is really similar style and I decided to play the album again and now I'm absolutely loving it! The riffs and the energy is fucking amazing. I think my music taste has changed a bit lately and I'm only really appreciating her style now properly. And after reading about her other releases I'm definitely wanting to hear like 5 other albums from her as well.

So Low from that album is a great song. OCS didn't change the wheel or do anything mind blowing, but I always have a soft spot for them, and Moseley Shoals is a fantastic Britpop era album, their best work. Marchin' Already was a good follow up and I loved One From the Modern and Mechanical Wonder too, but they lost me after that. Still a great live band worth checking out, always expect them to tour before Christmas and they sell out too.

Fantastic album, still a massively underrated album actually prefer the two follow up albums but all their work is top notch. Catch the Sun is a belter of song. I know it's on the following album but Still think There Goes The Fear is one of greatest singles of the last 20 years. A bit like Supergrass, one of those band's that age a lot better then most.

Listened to Hatful of Hollow this evening and it occurred to me just how incredible those bass lines were that Andy Rourke came up with. As much as we hear of Morrissey and Marr as a duo, that band is truly made of 4 legends.
