Obviously I can't imagine it having not been an Oasis fan in 2000, but hearing Standing on the Shoulder of Giants after Be Here Now must have been desperately disappointing no? I can imagine that some maybe thought Be Here Now was a blip - a good album for many, just not near the quality of the first two. But, hey, they'd surely be back to top quality with a stylistic reinvention or perhaps simply just better songs than Be Here Now. So when hearing this one, it must have killed all the hope. And the less said about subsequent releases, the better considering a good many think Giants is the 4th best album after the first three. When the BHN tour ended, there was a big break and Noel spoke how the first 3 albums were pub rock but albums 4-6 were going to be a new phase and sound. That got me excited. Were they gonna be like the Beatles and take their music to the next level? That didn’t really happen but the sonic landscape did get an overhaul. The album does sound great but the songs weren’t there. When doing the mini USA tour in 1999 noel spoke about how SOTSOG was almost where he wanted to be sonically but the album contained two shit songs (PYMWYMI and ICSAL). I thought it was weird at the time to do interviews and say such things. He wasn’t kidding either. That ended up being true. SOTSOG was also the first time I noticed Liam’s voice being different. A little more gruff in places. Nothing major but a sign that things might change on that front. Overall it felt like a tad of a let down. Album only had 10 songs and Liam only sings 6 tunes! Combine that with only 1 b side sung by Liam. When you have a weapon like Liam you use it for Fucks sakes. What were your thoughts on listening THAT, FON and HIABP(since they played/ did a soundtrack with then) and the rest of HC? It must have sucked.

I definitely expected a lot more from Andy then what he gave us in Oasis. That is probably unfair of me but coming from his Ride background I was excited. Didn't expect Gem to write good material, just wanted to be a solid bandmate which he has been to Oasis, Beady Eye and High Flying Birds. Solid dude all around it seems. I don't recall the bootleg MP3 of THT, FON or HIABP sounding too good in quality so I had no idea how to judge them accurately. Kinda just waited for HC to leak. THT was our first song, Liam's vocals seemed condensed or tightened. Not sure the words I'm looking for here. Just didn't sound like classic Liam. The singles are all great but too much junk mixed in for album tracks. The production of the album is probably the worst of all Oasis records. A total 180 from SOTSOG's facelift sound. As a touring band, Oasis were fantastic between 1999 and 2009. The albums they created however were lackluster. That saddens me to write.

Heathen Chemistry came in at #267 on my local rock stations 300 greatest albums ever. Ahead of Exile on Main Street. Wtf Not conducted by a bloke called Andrew Duffy by any chance? He did a 2002 interview with Noel for a Singaporean newspaper under the heading "From Hell to Perfect Rock" including this memorable quote about 'Heathen Chemistry'- The whole article was typed up on a U2 fan forum in 2002 and can be found HERE

I am a massive SOTSOG fan and in fact as it stands today it is my 2nd favourite Oasis album but in 2000 it went down like a lead balloon. At that time it seemed an age since BHN but in reality it’s been around 18months between the end of that tour and the start of the SOTSOG promo. If you compare that with how long bands seem to take now, it’s nothing really. People still believed.
Be Here Now was the inevitable result of too much coke and success but Oasis were now back....
The problem was the ideas, songs and sound were right but the Chief wasn’t fully behind it so there was no conviction. Firstly Noel bottled putting a fully ‘downer’ album out and therefore ICSAL and PYMWYMI were selected over LAMB and OWR. But more importantly the fact Andy and Gem had come on board before the album was released meant that Noel had already had a glimpse into what Oasis MK2 was going to be and SOTSOG didn’t fit into that vision. So it was already the unwanted child before it’d been born!
HC was an even bigger disappointment however because of all their talk beforehand and the fact Andy Bell was now also on board I expected the greatest rock record of our time, the result however........

I will never understand people that don't like this band... When I hear Liam talking about his period away from music going through divorce, I just think of him with a drink in hand at home listening to this, sounds so poignant to that situation. Particularly this verse: Day by day There's a man in a suit Who's gonna make you pay For the thoughts that you think And the words they won't let you say

Is there a link between Liam's "Is it any wondeeeer" at the Brit Awards 1996 and the GLIO pre-chorus ?
Unless I'm missing something obvious?

This live version of this song was so mega, Liam and Noel going out of sync with each other towards the end made it sound double mega, not to mention the outro which is just mega to end all mega

Happy (belated) Birthday to SOTSOG. Couple of B-side swap outs and it could have been a real return to form, at least we have playlists now so we can experience what might have been, eh? Is there a link between Liam's "Is it any wondeeeer" at the Brit Awards 1996 and the GLIO pre-chorus ? Unless I'm missing something obvious? I wondered that for years, but I don't think so. It's "Fame" by David Bowie, is it not?

18 years. this is madness.
college years, on my bed in my tiny room with headphones on and then the last song kicked off... ROLL IT OVER.
what a trip.
(I'd only heard Bushes, GLIO, WFL and Sunday Morning Call at that point (maybe Little James? can't remember)

Also means it’ll be 18 years next week until I got into Oasis!
Started hanging out with some cooler kids that year in school who liked proper music. They were counting down the days to the new Oasis record, my birthday was coming up so I asked my mom for the new Oasis album to fit in.
Literally a month later my birthday money had been spent on The Masterplan, Definitely Maybe, Morning Glory and Be Here Now (in that order) and everything had changed. Honestly the greatest time of musical discovery ever! Hearing most of those songs for the first time during a 4 week period was insane.
To think it was 18 years ago is even more mental

That rider is quite glaringly missing a nice assorted cheese plate. Thanks. Got a complimentary block of L'Etivaz cheese from the cheesemonger today.... A cheese plate would be near the top of my rider list; along with a cat, domestic or big cat. Thanks.
