Alright guys, let's keep the parent thread spoiler free. Some don't get to see it till later this weekend or next week. Anyway, while I'm very tired, it was a roller coaster of a movie. Felt like Star Wars and was very nostalgic of the originals while building its own new and unique story in the Star Wars universe that felt believable. You cared about the characters and the dialogue was incredible. Set designs were amazing and the atmosphere was spot on. There's much to discuss about spoilers so who wants to start off?

I was just about to suggest this. I enjoyed that movie so much. Guess Harrison Ford would only agree to one movie haha! Also, for like a bit there I actually thought they weren't gonna show Luke at all during the movie. Was very happy! Couldn't wait another couple years for that!

I'd rate the films right now as this:
Empire Strikes Back A New Hope The Force Awakens Return of the Jedi Revenge of the Sith The Phantom Menance Attack of the Clones

The only thing that I wasn't that happy about was there really wasn't a new distinctive John Williams track for this movie. Obviously nitpicking because it was awesome to hear Leia's theme/Force theme, but even the prequels had some very distinctive music, and I think this was kind of lacking. Not saying it was bad or in any way lessened my experience (smiling the ENTIRE MOVIE), but just something that came to mind.

Also, any thoughts on the theory the old guy in the beginning was supposed to be Wedge?

Otherwise yeah there was a slight change with the theme but overall the same (as it should be).

Posted this in other thread but anyway...
My Theory and it's just a theory is that Rey is Luke's daughter who he hid from everything by putting her on Jakku to keep her away from the force because Snoke would be after her the same way he got Kylo Ren. Luke didn't want Rey to go through what Kylo went through. That's why she can clearly use the force and has something 'special' about her. Just a theory.

Thanks, I was thinking we needed a spoiler thread. Here's what I was about to post in the other one:
After the heat the prequels got (not saying this to defend the prequels, that isn't at all my point) over Anakin being a whiny kid/teenager/young adult and ruining Vader's persona, it's interesting how they took Kylo and got right into showing him as weak and insecure. To me, that's a pretty bold move, if he's going to be the main antagonist for at least the next film.
Again, I'm not defending the prequels, but I agree with what I saw Kevin Smith saying, that you shouldn't have expected anything else because a brutal tyrant like Darth Vader would start as a whiny teenager. I applaud them for continuing the narrative of Anakin's internal struggles with this new character. And I suspect Episode 8 will get heavy on philosophical discussion, as Episode 5 did.

They made it WAY TOO obvious she's Luke's daughter. Especially at the end. Also while my theory about Ben and Rey being Han and Leia's kids was partially true (with Ben at least), I'm sure we haven't seen the last of Ben.

Didn't like the look of him to be honest and didn't see the point in a guy of Andy Serkis' caliber mo-capping him if all he was doing was sitting on his arse like Thanos in GotG.

I personally can't rank The Force Awakens higher than 4th because it literally is a direct copy of A New Hope in terms of plot points and story movement. JJ has always been a derivative filmmaker. This seals it.
1. Empire 2. A New Hope 3. Jedi 4. Force Awakens
* I do not recognize the prequels.

As many have said, Snoke looked like Voldemort meets a Lord of The Rings goblin. In my mind I pictured something vastly different. I kinda wanted Snoke to be that Cyborg guy in the leaked concept art from a year ago. I do realize that was just early Kylo Ren art but the look was awesome.

Just back from seeing it and I thought it was absolutely phenomenal. Yes, it did follow the template of A New Hope and to a lesser extent Jedi, but it didn't feel like a direct copy. I also thought it had just the the right amount of nostalgia.

It'll be 30 years until we can properly rate Episode 7 against the original trilogy I think. Pretty good how there was essentially no reference to the prequels, other than the word 'Sith' being used once.
I did think the part where the Resistance destroy the Starkiller base too predictable, we'd seen the same thing done in episodes 1, 4 and 6 so I thought that was a bit of a cop out.
The First Order looked really badass and I wish we got to hear more about them, I'm sure that'll be addressed in Episode 8 though. I thought the stormtrooper were proper badasses, the blood and mud stains on their armour really added to the effect for me. I know it's such a minor thing but little details like that really appeal to me as it makes it more realistic.
Kylo Ren is a great villain, that walk he does is so cool! As soon as Han walked onto the bridge with him I knew he was a goner, there was no way we were going to redeem the villain that early in the trilogy! Adam Driver did an excellent job portraying him I thought, that guy deserves a lot of credit.
One thing I picked up on: John Boyega has an English accent in real life but he put on an American accent to play Finn. This is unusual because in the Star Wars universe the stormtroopers/imperials/bad guys have English accents and the rebels/Jedi/glod guys all have American accents. Daisy Ridley used a very strong English accent for Rey, which suggests to me that she isn't Luke's daughter as many are speculating.
Maybe I'm overthinking it too much there?

And it wasn't a situation you'd think Han would be enough of a sap to fall into. However, I think Harrison Ford did well at getting across that Han was overconfident in knowing his son and wanting to turn him back to the light side. I think the reason for it was Harrison Ford always wanted Han to die to begin with; he wanted to die in RotJ because he felt the character should die for a cause. Which he kind of does in this movie.

POSITIVES>Some of the Han/Chewie scenes >Visually breathtaking >Actually felt like a living, breathing universe - puppets! real sets! >The second act - particularly enjoyed Lupita N'yong'o's character >The scene where Rey finds Anakin Skywalker's old lightsaber >BB-8Cute and funny, and, lets face it, a bloody goldmine for merchandise, BB-8 is everything Jar-Jar wasn't. And that is a very GOOD thing indeed. >Rey!!! I wondered from her first scene, I knew for sure after her second - I love this character. Whether the other new characters that have been introduced will stand the test of time, we shall see, but I have absolutely no problem AT ALL with the prospect of spending another 4/5 hours with Rey. I was unsure of Ridley from what I saw in the trailers, but I think she comes out of this looking better than perhaps anybody else in the cast. Action, comedy, drama, she handles everything with such aplomb you'd think she were a seasoned pro and not an almost complete unknown. Not for one minute do you doubt that she is her character: you absolutely believe she is this girl lost and alone on a barren planet, forced to scavenge for a living; and then, most importantly, it's not at all a stretch of the imagination to believe that she might actually have some hidden power lying somewhere beneath the surface. And you just can't help but root for her. You absolutely want to see her standing up for herself against the bad guy, and getting out of tight spots with TIE fighters, and riffing with Han. And being able to care so much for a protagonist without really having to put much work in yourself, is essential to what makes a good hero. NEGATIVES>Took a while to get going>Soooooooooooo much fan service/rehashing old material-Poe gives BB-8 the map just like Leia gave R2 the plans to the Death Star. The droid then absently roams a desert planet for a while and has the good fortune to end up in the hands of one of the very few beings in the whole galaxy blessed with the gift of The Force (either that or just a high midiclorean count...) -Fat alien with a sexy slave is in league with the First Order, just like Jabba was kind of connected to the Empire -Big Death Star -Big Death Star is destroyed -Han mentors Rey and dies at the hands of Kylo Ren just like how Ob-Wan mentored Luke and then was offed by Vader -N'young'o's character similar to Yoda; Rey's scene in the vault too bares some resemblance to Luke's in the cave on Dagobah -Luke's hideout has a little hut on it similar to Yoda's gaff -General Hux is Moff Tarkin. Over-the-top English accent an' all. >A tad reliant on formulaA LOT of blaster fights, and though Rey evading some TIE fighters in the Falcon was awesome, I did get a little tired of the all the airborne set-pieces >Carrie Fisher is no longer able to move her top lip. Or act, it seems. >Kylo Ren is a weak villain. And Phasma is even worse. >Underwhelming Williams score (no, seriously!) >Lennon2217 was right - the new Death Star was too confusing and "sci-fi" - I didn't even realise Poe had destroyed it at the end, I thought he'd just taken out the power station it was linked to on the planet Han and all the rest were on... It's exactly what I thought it would be: a beautifully shot, rollicking blockbuster with tasteful direction and welcome moments of comic relief; nothing more, nothing less. Much like the Bond franchise, I think what Star Wars needs now is to be willing to shove its history to one side and forge a new path. Alright, so it's the first in ten years, and the first since 1982 to feature the original cast, but if we're still just going "hey remember those aliens who played that silly tune in the cantina scene in the original? Here's another batch of aliens who kinda like look them, and they're playing a silly little tune too!" in the next one, or god forbid, the one after that, it's going to start to drag, and the films are not going to hold together as a trilogy of work. 7/10 (might have given it a higher rating, had it not been for some utter c*nt spoiling Han's death for me a few months back)

Also why was Kylo Ren really not great with his lightsaber? Should've literally killed Finn instantly with his abilities surely???
