So I was putting together a Be Here Now/Urban Hymns playlist and it seemed to me both Don't Go Away and The Drugs Don't Work risk stopping the relentless swagger of the rest of the playlist. They're both great however so I want to keep one, the question is - which? The two songs are similar in tone and lyrical style, both clearly being the emotional centre of their respective albums. Both feature great vocals and have irresistible melodies, but which do you prefer?
Playlist ATM:
1. D'You Know What I Mean? 2. Bittersweet Symphony 3. Stand By Me 4. I Hope, I Think, I Know 5. Lucky Man 6. The Drugs Don't Work 7. Fade In-Out 8. Don't Go Away 9. Stay Young 10. All Around the World 11. It's Gettin' Better (Man!!) 12. All Around the World (Reprise)

I prefer The Drugs Don't Work, especially having heard the MTV acoustic version recently.

For me, I'd say Don't Go Away. Liam's vocal performance is so powerful, and well, real, similar to Rockin' Chair and Cast No Shadow, which are both great vocal performances by him on very emotional songs.

I knew this poll was coming, about time.
As much as I love Don't Go Away, The Drugs Don't Work is the superior song.

Don't Go Away.
The only song I can think of (apart from his backing vox on D'Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman? perhaps) where we get to hear just a trace of vulnerability in Liam's voice. Knowing as we do, that when he sung it, he was under the misapprehension that his mam had cancer, it makes it all the more powerful. The Drugs Don't Work is a beautiful tune, but such is the power of Liam's voice on Don't Go Away, there can be no competition for me. And then you've got the tune itself, which also happens to be great -- like Whitey's drumming, dig Noel's brilliantly self-obsessed guitar work, the outro is a nice change of pace for that album etc.

For your playlist, I'd keep Don't Go Away. The Drugs Don't Work kills the overall mood.

Big fan of Don't Go Away. Great vocals and perfect blend of strings.

Talking about strings, I only noticed the other day how bloody great the strings on Stand By Me are. Always knew there was something about that song that made it soar (despite the boring chorus) and now I finally know. Can't say I've ever really heard them before tbh, but then that is Owen Morris for you! Always leaving us little treats to be uncovered from the general disarray of one of his mixes. Like an Easter bunny with a cocaine addiction.

I have a love-hate relationship with it. In this playlist it was needed to give a rock balance to the many pop tunes there.

If after Liam's scream half-way in, it sounded like the live version, with mad, spiralling guitars firing off in all directions, it'd've been bloody brilliant. If we got an acoustic version of Don't Go Away and a fully balls-out, over-the-top Fade In-Out with the remaster, I could die content.

Also I'd like to hear the keyboard in Stand By Me given greater prominence - it seems to have a nice mellow tone, when it isn't drowned out by the clattering drums and guitar riffs.

The Drugs Don't Work for me, it's one of the most heartbreaking songs I've ever heard. BTW how gorgeous is everything going on underneath the surface on DGA?! soundcloud.com/m-car/dga-oops/s-0yh3R

I adore The Drugs Don't Work until the "oooooohhhhh sha-la-la-la" chorus which is cheesy even for solo Ashcroft. Likewise, the guitar riffs seem out of place in Don't Go Away for me. Both have great strengths and obvious weaknesses IMO, makes it a tough choice.

Oh wow, thanks A LOT for the link. Anymore of those for the other songs on Be Here Now? (or any of the other 90s albums tbf, they're all badly produced)

Like an Easter bunny with a cocaine addiction. Good wording haha But I know what you mean. The strings just swell right in and out of the pre-chorus, and then in the chorus, that breakdown is immense. It really makes things seem colossal, and I like that. It adds another dimension to a song that you would be expect to be stripped back and more relaxed, like what you get with the By the Pool version (which is top notch too). This song has extra significance for me because it's the first ever Oasis song I discovered, and I'm damn happy I did, so I have to give a little more love to the song.

I feel the same about it. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I really dislike it. Anyway, The Drugs Don't Work is the more superior song to me. I like Don't Go Away a lot, but the horns should've been more audible and just like on Stand By Me, the guitars are too overdone.

So so tough, Liam's vocal are so powerful and full of brimming emotion, but the music is far too electric guitar-heavy.
The Drugs Don't Work is the song that made me fall in love with the Verve
Gonna have to choose the latter

One of the best threads on this forum imo. Good stuff in there.
