Hi folks, My laptop runs Windows 7 and I find it really easy to use as I'm not the most gifted when it comes to computers, however I have registered for the free upgrade to Windows 10. Before the time comes to install it does anyone know if I will lose my music files if I upgrade to Windows 10? I basically only use my laptop for the internet and iTunes. This page seems to indicate I will keep "Personal files" so I assume my music will be fine? windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/preview-faq-what-can-keep-pcI'm not the most computer literate and I don't want to lose anything so if it means keeping Windows 7 then I've no problem in doing so. Thanks for any help!

Everything in your 'home' folder should be safe when doing an upgrade, which means all of your documents, pictures, music etc. However, I would always do a full backup before doing updating an OS just to be on the safe side.

After installing it should create a Windows.old folder in your Local Disk directory, with your personal files (pictures, documents, music etc.) in it. Just make sure that all your music is in the music library, not scattered around the hard drive.

Cool, The upgrade still isn't available as yet, only the preview.
I may hang off for a bit and keep an eye out to make sure there are no teething problems first and I'll look into backing up the files too.

Not really. Unless the installer states that all programs will be kept, a reinstall is necessary.

Thanks for any help! it should be fine, and not touch personal files this not the exact solution but 'the cloud' is amazing as basic safety net. support.google.com/googleplay/answer/1143668?hl=en-GBgoogle allows you to uploads up to 50,000 songs for free and up to 300mb per track, which obv then available on all your devices etc

As jaq151 said, google play music is great. It has an option to upload your entry iTunes collection automatically, and will check always if you added new songs. If your iTunes library is too big it will take a while (days in my case) but always in background. Its great because you can access your music anywhere. Its great for backup and people that don't like spotify like me (I like to own my music, not rent it).
About the windows 10 update:
The way the updates woks since windows 8 is not like years ago. Now it doesn't uninstall any program nor delete any data nor create a windows_old folder. All stays intact, only the interface/internal system changes. It's like when you update iTunes from, say, version 11.1 to 11.2.
Different is a full reinstall (not update) that will erease the harddrive for a clean install. But this is not the case for updating windows 7/8/8.1
**It might uninstall a not compatible software, but it will advise you first**
About the browser question, internet explorer will probably be replaced by Spartan, but keeping your bookmarks/history.
A backup is recommended anyway. Specially those demos and bootlegs collection.
Trust me I know this as I'm sure mustique demos are great.

Your music should be fine, but to anyone that uses Windows Media Player or Windows Media Center, you will lose the programs. Microsoft has not bothered to include them in windows 10, probably because most people now stream online or use itunes and the like.
I use Window Media Player, I like it more than itunes for organization and it's going to be really annoying to see it go.

Windows Media Player is available to download here, directly from Microsoft. There should be a 10-compatible download link by the time Windows 10 officially launches (July 29th).

Jim, I highly suggest backup your things before any OS upgrade. If you can't spend money on a good external drive, then between google and microsoft outlook aka hotmail- Drive One you should have near enough space to back up between cloud services. I love windows 10. I prefer over windows 7. Any special programs also make sure you have product keys and able re-install if needed. Just an upgrade should keep your files and programs intact, but never a guarantee. A little effort is worth the upgrade. Right Now Windows 10 while very dependable, but still BETA, which in means it will be updating a lot. Windows media player is included in windows 10, just not a prefer player by Microsoft anymore.

Any external hard drive with more storage space than your own HD will do the job. Try and get one with a USB 3 connection for faster transfer speeds.

It's a 250gb hard drive I have on the laptop so would that 160gb one above not be any use if it's only the music (50gb) I want to back up? Not arsed about the rest of the computer as apart from iTunes I only use it for the internet.

Great, I've ordered it so I can back the music up just to be safe. Thanks for the help once again. I really need to get my head around the technical side of computers at some point. My brother has been telling me to get an iPad as they are in words "idiot proof" when the time comes but I like the laptop, especially for the storage capacity as the cloud storage goes over my head (no pun intended).

I'm going to have to disagree with your brother here. I find iPads to be incredibly restrictive; that's why they're 'idiot proof'. I'd definitely stick with a laptop.

I think I will, not had any problems at all with this laptop whatsoever and it's nearly 5 years since I bought it. My brother swears by Apple, he is on his 4th iPhone, has the newest iPad I think, Apple TV and also the new watch, wee bit obsessed I reckon!

Also you can have ALL your music on your phone as it either just streams or DL the track you want at that specific time so takes up no storage either. Is really good.

I'll certainly have a look into the cloud storage as by the looks of it a lot the near future technology will be wireless so if I do want something on my phone for example I'll need the cloud at some point. One Drive looks quite easy to use, but I'm not sure windows 7 users can use it, the Microsoft website only mentions windows 8 here so perhaps after the upgrade I can begin to use it : windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/getting-started-onedrive-tutorialI guess I'm stuck in my ways that I'm used to having something physical for storage, either the laptop, a burnt CD / DVD or usb stick, I find it strange storing a file on something I can't see!
