Definitely Maybe got 8.8, and Morning Glory 8.9, but yeah, everything else after got a worse rating than this - including The Masterplan, which got a fucking 3.7!! Yeah but DM and MG were not in real time reviews since Pitchfork didn't exist. Those are retrospective grades. Ah, I see. Were they around for Be Here Now coming out, because they gave that less than a 6

Do you reckon it'll be Number 1?

I reckon it'll be number 1, Stereophonics prob number 3 or 4. Real shame about The View though, their new album is absolutely quality but due to bad management and poor single choice it probably won't make the top 10.....real shame as they deserve it

On first listen, I think 7/10 is fair. Solid album, nothing more though.

Pitchfork's mild respect for the Lib's in interesting. I've always thought that the Libertines were a tad overrated especially in British/anglophile circles. Don't get me wrong they are a very, very good band, but I'm not sure if I'd call them a great generational band or anything. Definitely wouldn't get a tattoo of the band or anything. In some respects they kinda play the role of the la's or the stone roses to Arctic Monkey's Oasis in terms of 00's british rock n roll.
Up the Bracket is fantastic, a great record in its own right and considering the context of the musical landscape, but I prefer debuts by the Exploding Hearts, the Strokes, and even Arctic Monkey. Second one is pretty solid, but then again it isn't an amazing album by any means. Much like the band themselves, they always seemed better when they burned from both ends. They have a couple absolutely amazing songs Time For Heroes, Vertigo, Can't Stand Me Now, Music When the Lights Go Out to name a few.
I'll always appreciate them for their reckless aesthetic and their Clash and Kinks leanings, but they don't consistently wow me. Now that instrumental break on Time for Heroes, as a magic to it that few bands are able to capture. Those 30-45 seconds are just pure magic and bands better than the Lib's don't even have moments like that.
What are peoples thoughts on this third one? Will give it a spin, but will probably do it sooner rather than later if people are diggin it.

It's a good solid album with good songs and great lyrics, but for me certainly it's just a relief that they are back, so if anything I reckon this will lead to greater things. It's a paving stone, especially since they haven't been around for 11 years....
7/10 is pretty accurate I would say, often leaning towards the 8.
If your looking for an album full of Don't Look Back Into The Sun's, then look elsewhere, this record is full of classic libertines vibes and most importantly of all- lyrics, as they open up fully about practically every problem they ever had as a band. Sort of a "healing" record if you ask me.
Highlights: Anthem For Doomed Youth, Iceman, Barbarians, Belly Of The Beast

Maybe one of the odder tracks on the album, but I am really digging Fame and Fortune, something enchanting about it, really like it!

It definitely is more polished and commercialized than their previous efforts, but that's not a bad thing.

These guys somehow got a higher score than Oasis ever did on Pitchfork. I figured they would destroy the libertines. What does 7.7 even mean FFS

So Pete's not turned up to their gig tonight and it's now been cancelled due to a "medical emergency"...
He seems to have been doing well staying clean for a while now so a it would be a shame if he's relapsed now. Hopefully it's not too serious.

I still can't get into this band and I've tried so many times over the last decade. Listened to them before, never felt the need to get in to them. Went completely over my head. Bland guitars, shit vocals.... some decent lyrics but I've heard it before but better with The Smiths and The Kinks. And Pete Doherty is the biggest fud in the music industry. Thanks to these twats, they inspired a whole deluge of NME shite wankfest material like The Enemy, Razorlight and Brother. And don't even get me started on Dirty Pretty Things. A massive nail in the coffin of British guitar music. Franz Ferdinand were way way better from that era.

Great musicians, drummer Gary Powell drummed for the New York Dolls in recent years. Thanks.
