For a day now, my laptop has had the dreaded blue screen of death. Every time i try and load it up,all i get is a blue screen with a sad face. Every website i have been on doesnt help. Even loading up safe mode isnt working 5 out of 10 times. Why wont it work and is there a way of getting it to work again?

Did you install something recently? And when you go in safe mode is it a sudden thing, or does it take a minute or so to show up?
It sounds driver/hardware related since it happens in safe mode.

Could be your graphics driver. Try to uninstall it from the device manager when you're in safe mode, and restart after that. It should automatically install an older version.

I would buy a hard drive dock and get your stuff off your hard drive. If you're running 4 GB of RAM, then it should handle windows 10. Windows 10 is free. You might be able to upgrade from windows 8 to 10, but I don't want to be responsible if your files got lost. It's the route i'd try. Many do have on board diagnosis. Very possible corrupted or missing .dll file.

Thank you for the help. Currently now back up and running (albeit very slowly compared to before the blue screen.)
I managed to get safe mode running and ran system restore (despite it claiming before hand that I didn't have it.) After the restore, it did the blue screen again and then loaded back up ok. As I have said, it's running much slower than before, could it be too many files? Rain, I may try that once I manage to get hold of a hard drive to transfer my documents and music etc over. Jessica, the last thing I installed was about 3/4 weeks ago to be honest, the last thing actually installed was a windows update which I have now restored to what it was before it was on. Riverman, I wouldn't know where to begin with the drivers and am too scared to even try uninstalling something incase I ruin it more

Is it an AMD? If so I'd recommend backing up your data, either upgrading to Windows 10 or reinstall 8.1, delete your AMD data in the windows old folder or just delete the entire folder, then going to the AMD site and install the recommended driver. Pain in the arse, yes, but it happened to me and after I did this it never happened again. If you do do this though, please, back up everything you need cos most times some documents are preserved but the odd few disappear

Sounds like maybe your hard drive is failing. You say it's running "slow" now but has the computer been running "hot" recently?
If you've got it running, backup everything you need off it before you try rebooting it again.

If you've got it running, backup everything you need off it before you try rebooting it again. Not necessary. Most likely OS ( windows) is corrupted. Transfer personal files and I would install windows 10. If issues concur, then do a scan disk on boot up and cluster issues pop up, then it's the hard drive. Sometimes hard drives do make a slight clicking sound too. Like I said, the computer needs to be at least 4 GB of RAM. You can do 3 GB, but it's painful AKA... slow. Download windows 10 windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/preview-isoMake a bootable USB wudt.codeplex.com

Not breaking down, but linux +wifi or linux +printers or linux+ wifi printers is not it's friend. I mean, sometimes it doesn't support each other

It could be a fan issue as well, when I had a desktop with win xp it would suddendly have BSOD and when I replaced it, it stopped doin that. But if you dont have dust in you fan disregard this post.

Thankfully with Mint, the driver comes bundled but just not enabled. I've never tried to set up a printer with Linux but I imagine there'd be similar driver issues. I think I just have an irrational dislike of Windows.

On laptops.... Leave battery out and plug it in. If the computer can not boot up or power up, then it's a bad motherboard.

I think it's the right step in direction.

I'm not a massive fan of the Unity desktop but it's still a good operating system from what I've used. I still haven't tried Windows 10 (after several failed attempts to install it in VirtualBox) but it has to be better than Windows 8.

supernovadragon, sounded like it was a RAM issue. BSOD commonly has to do with it acting funky, hence why it says dumping memory. How much RAM do you have in your machine?

And yes, they are genuine licensed copies. Glad Windows 10 will be free for Win7 and Win8 users. I built my desktop last January for games and installed Win7 Ultimate SP1 because of how more stable older programs ran on it, but I do have 8.1 on my laptop and it isn't terrible. I recommend using this for anyone who wants the start menu from Windows 7 www.classicshell.net/Also Rain, do you think people should just wait till Summer to get Windows 10? Heard it's releasing in a few months as it is, and the upgrade is going to be free.

Microsoft's game plan have everyone on 10 and off of 7. 8 and 8.1 failed. btw bad RAM will beep when powering up and won't go pass the bios.

Really never understood the hate with Windows 8. I've had Windows 8 since September, and I have no problems with it, and don't mind it at all.
Now what is a bit fucking diabolical is that it now costs an annual subscription for Microsoft Word. What the fuck!? Get the fuck out, Bill Gates.
