Marcus Russell should never be allowed to interfere with the music. Bit annoying to read how he was wary of Noel trying new things. Reminds me of that story where Brian Epstein made a remark on a Beatles recording, and as shot down by Lennon saying the manager should have no say on the music. I guess he's entitled to his opinion. There are saxophones on the album so presumably Noel brushed him off as well. Presumably Noel weighs opinion like that and decides if he is gonna listen. I think there is nothing wrong with someone in Noel's life expressing concern or having a negative opinion. I think there is more harm done by having too many yes men around saying everything is amazing. He is a yes man though, if he had any balls, he would have told Noel that Be Here Now wasn't the greatest idea. I have no information to back it up, but it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he dissuaded Noel from experimenting more with Oasis' sound because he wanted to keep the gravy train going.

Marcus Russell - being the manager - is only interested in the commercial aspect of it all, which doesn't give much room for creativity and art. If he had his way, he'd be happy with an album full of Roll With Its and Lylas.

If he had his way, he'd be happy with an album full of Roll With Its and Lylas. There is nothing wrong with Lyla and Roll With It's. He's probably one of those that pushed for Lyla's inclusion on DBTT when Noel was relictant and I think that album would have been poorer without it. Not and album full of them. But there is nothing wrong with those kinds of songs if done well. I think maybe someone does need to be viewing the music from that perspective. For things like ensuring that the right songs get picked for singles. And to a certain extent that there are songs that are included on the album that would make good singles. Marketability is important to a certain extent. Do I think he should be leading the way? No. Do I think Noel should always listen to him? No, and he didn't in this case. Noel's a big boy and not gonna be intimidated by someone like Mark Russell into doing some he doesn't want to. But I agree with you he shouldn't have any direct say in what Noel does in the studio. I just dont have any problem with him voicing an opinion that Noel can take or leave.

Noel standing with a Deluxe Tele? And auditioning sax players? Good times ahead, folks. At the very least, interesting ones. Maybe he's turning into Bruce Springsteen?

I believe Brian Epstein almost had a nervous breakdown prior to the release of Sgt. Pepper. He even had brown paper bags ready to go to cover up the album cover.

Wonder what he thought of Revolver then, I think that's a bigger jump in innovation from Rubber Soul than Sgt Pepper is from Revolver.

That's a good thing by the way. A lot was different with Pepper and endless overdubs, new Beatles look and no upcoming tours.

I see your point, definitely with Sgt Peppers recording being much more layered. I've always thought the heavier sound and much more psychedelic feel of Revolver puts it in stark contrast to Rubber Soul. But I kind of define (perhaps misleadingly) Rubber Soul by my favourite tunes - In My Life, Michelle, Norwegian Wood - and they are much lighter, stripped back tunes.

Read it all now. Good interview.
But you lot made it sound like Marcus Russell almost forced him not to try anything new, which it didn't sound like to me.

This, he probably gave Noel some advices only, he didn't forced to Noel to do this or that, and if so, where was him to force Noel to edit BHN cos it was too long?
