Ok for a long time now i've used audacity, i have an old windows xp computer, which i've only kept for recording music, but now it keeps crashing, but i have had it for years anyway.
i have a stereo system that i have leads going from & to the tower thing [whatever it's called] input & output.
My question is, can i record using my laptop? i've just installed audacity, on the left hand side of my laptop there's a mic & headphones logos, can anyone give me any advice or help please?
i have always used my mic, & headphones.

You have a laptop with a microphone and you installed Audacity, then I take you can record using your laptop.

Hey Mimi, This audacity don't have as many options as the audacity on my old computer, are these the right options selected, like the speakers, stereo mix etc .. On the left side there's 3 options: NME/windows direct sound/windows WASAPI .. windows wasapi, does nothing. i tried different options without my mic in, the nme picks up sound without mic, but everything i've tried, the volume seems wavy, doesn't sound right. Also which setting should i have my input & output on? and which input & output device should i choose? I'm sorry to be a pain :-(

I'm sorry I'm afraid that I can't help you because I don't know much about these things. I used to have had Audacity in past, but the one I had wasn't same as yours. I think it was an old version.
Do you want to record audio from streaming?
I better leave it to the people with a good technical knowledge. I'm sorry.

Hey again, it's ok. It's just for recording my own music, i know how to select label track & to overdub, it's just the actual input/output volume settings i'm not sure about & the input/output device.
Do you know anyone on here who could maybe help, please?

I do quite a bit of recording with Audacity, and here's what I've found: If you have a built in mic like for laptops, it should be "Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input" If you have a USB device like a USB mic or USB amp then you should plug it in, restart Audacity, maybe restart your PC, and then it should show up. If it is a mic plugged into the mic port, then in general it should be similar to the above.
If for some reason none of these work, try going to control panel>hardware and sound>sound>recording There, right click in the window and make sure disabled devices are shown. Click on your mic/recording device and choose configure. Make sure it is enabled, then check the levels. Maybe a simple audio boost is all you need to make it sound better/show up? Some mics are unbelievably quiet, for no real reason.
That's all I can think of right now, let me know if this helps! Sometimes audacity can be a bit finnicky about its inputs.
