Ok I connected my hard drive to my comp & I sent some videos from a usb to it, anyway for some reason, something came up on the bottom right of screen, it had disconnected itself, I don't know why, I tried to safely remove it, but it said in use, so I left the usb lead in & just restared comp, now it says there's nothing on it??
Anyone have any ideas?

Anyone have any ideas? A lot of external hard drives have small board with power supply attached. Most of the time the power supply goes out or partially goes out. I have taken the board off and connected with Apricorn Universal Hard Drive Adapter www.amazon.com/Apricorn-DriveWire-Universal-Adapter-ADW-USB-KIT/dp/B000QY9KISIt works ok, but streaming wise it's a bit slower afterward due to the adapter. It works and able recover data though. This all of course the hard drive not making the dreaded clicking sound on the zero sector on the hard drive. If it isn't then try what I suggested. If it is, then more serious issues. 90% the time is the power supply on the board on the external hard drive is bad. The adapter is the cheapest way recover and transfer to a new hard drive. You still can use hard drive with adapter, but transfer rate or streaming rate is slower. Good Luck!

Anyone have any ideas? Same thing (different model) happened to me. Tried everything I could think of and after several hours I gave up. Was about to throw it out 24 hours later when I thought I'd give it one last chance. Just plugged it straight in and it was fine.

I feel your pain.
My first extern hard drive died 6 years ago, so I lost everything on it. I asked a computer specialist to recover it, but no luck. The one I have is better, but it's better to have a back ups outside hard drive too.

Sounds fecked. Have you tried a chkdsk on it?
Open up a command line window and type the following command:
chkdsk x: /f
Where x is the letter Windows has assigned to the disc. i.e. if it is D, then type:
chkdsk d: /f

Have you tired hook it to another computer? Western Digital external hard drives I have and drives installed after plugged. Still no luck, then my guess the power supply on the board.

Hey.
I have had a similar problem with a WD my passport hard drive. The issue is when I take it out the shell I can't recover the data because it doesnt have a sata connection! Is there an adaptor availablle for this? Will the 1 above work?
Any help to try & recover the data from this would be greatly appreciated.

I might be wrong, but I don't think there will be a caddy that will fit on that drive mate. I think all those WD drives have built-in USB connections. Your best option might be to take it to a data recovery specialist, or perhaps try some software that might be able to read the data from it even through Windows can't: Quick Google found this: www.techradar.com/news/software/applications/best-free-recovery-software-1141256

Ok I fixed it, all I did was connect my external hard drive to my laptop, I done a system restore, while it was left in, nothing happened, so I un done the system restore, then as it started loading up it said, scanning & repairing drive f ... whatever it was, but yeah it now works, if anyone else here is having the same problem, just try it.
I was surprised, soon as the page appeared with all my folders, I started moving them to my laptop etc .... back on track now.
Also thanks to everyone here for your help too.
